10- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, Sept. 13, 1994 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Local teacher will seek Liberal nomination Integrity and accountability will be required of provincial politicians looking to win back the public's confidence, says Dave Robinson, who announced recently he's seeking the Liberal nomination for the Durham East riding. Mr. Robinson, a 41-year-old Seagrave resident and law teacher at Port Perry High School, said during an inter- view he senses cynicism among voters, and wants to help restore their faith in govern- ment. "I would like to think it's time for common sense and dignity," he said. "There's a leadership and communication vacuum at Queen's Park... it's government run amok." Mr. Robinson feels strongly that an ethics commission ought to be created to guaran- tee open and honest govern- ment in the province, and would call for changes to MPPs pensions to ensure they're not paid out until members reach age 55, to avoid double-dipping. He would also like to see more free votes, allowing MPPs to vote according to the feeling in their communities, and reduc- tion of government staffing to save money. He'd also like leg- islation regulating the activi- ties of lobbyists, "so that people WAALS AAS Aus Sy AAS : SN a AAS | a AAS a WAALS AAS AAS AAS AAS AAS SAAS AAS As : SS AAS AAS AAS aH ado? a . Above all, Mr. Robinson vowed to be an accessible and responsive member of govern- ment. "I think our politicians have to be more approachable and accessible," he said. "I'm direct- ly answerable to the citizens of this riding; I'm their represen- tative. "The system should be set up so that the number one job is to serve the constituents." Mr. Robinson joins George Khouri, a Whitby businessman, and Bowmanville resident Douglas Bird in the competition for the Grit nod. A nomination meeting is expected this fall or next spring. Thé& next provincial vote will occur next spring.
