Peter Hvidsten Port Perry Star urham Regional Police honored its officers, members of the community and the media last Friday evening at the annual Police Awards night. More than 500 men and women from across the region gathered at Mill Run Golf and Country Club west of Uxbridge for the banquet 3 Durham's Regional Police honor officers, civilians and media at annual Awards Night those present. The Chief said, "the reality is, we are short- handed and crime has taken on an alarming rise in Durham Region." The Chief said the department is currently 11 per cent under strength and they must expedite a return to adequate officers in the community. Blaming cutbacks for the insufficient number of officers, Chief McCagherty said his top prior- ity is "replacement of street officers lost to the social contract." In a final plea he said, "a com- munities strength is its people... a police departments strength is its people... please don't leave us with too few people." During the evening, Canadian Police Exemplary Service Medals were presented to officers with 20 and 30 years service by Police Services Board Chairman James | Witty and Police Chief Trevor | McCagherty. | Sergeant John Found received a | medal for 40 years of dedicated service to the department. Police Commendations were pre- sented to four police officers, Constables Judy Gibson, Al Dennis Mastroianni, who all dis- tinguished themselves by acts of heroism or initiatives which bene- fited members of the community. The Sharon Bowdring Memorial Award is presented to the Auxiliary Officer of the Year and this year's recipient was Robert Buller. Media Awards were received by The Port Perry Star, MacLean Hunter Cable TV of Ajax and CKDO/CKGE Radio of Oshawa. Hvidsten and former editor Scott Anderson of the Port Perry Star were presented a Media Award for commitment to the com- munity and their coverage of police matters. Mayor Jim Witty, chairman of the Police Services Board said he was pleased to be able to help honor members of the public, "our ordinary citizens," who help to make the job of the police easier. Regional Chairman Gary Herrema intro- duced the Mayors and Councillors in atten- | dance and thanked the men and women of | the police force who serve the community. | "Keep up the good work," he told them. As host community of this years Awards Banquet, Uxbridge Township Mayor Gerri Lynn O'Connor welcomed everyone and praised Durham Regional Police as being one of the best departments in Ontario.
