As summer draws to an end, it was time for the "boys of winter" to take to the local pond to take over where the action ended last spring! Game one saw the Pizza De- light Devils and the Van World Sharks arrive for the 6:45 a.m. . start to the new season. Al- Ta though their bodies were weary, both teams came out flying. At the final buzzer, with most of the town still in bed, it was the Pizza Delight Devils 6 and the Van World Sharks 3. Ken Smart Sr. had the big game for the Pizza boys with a hat trick, followed by Mike "Dis- co" Driscoll with a goal and two assists. John Mackey and Bill Foote had the other tallies for .. the Pizza gang as Brian Steven- son, Tim Ashbridge, Ken Smart Jr., Todd Healey, Bob Beve- ridge and Bruce Smith all chipped in assists to seal the victory. For the Van World crew, Phil Cochrane netted a pair with Jay Adam scoring the single. As- sists went to Jay Adam, Gary Lance, Steve Connors, Terry Bache and Reg "At-a-boy" Tem- pleman. Game two saw the Pineridge Phantoms dominate the Comp- ton Comets to the tune of 6-3. Bill Van Camp, fresh from summer hockey, led the Phan- toms with a three goal and one assist performance! Steve Fox and Fred Moffatt both had a goal and an assist while Brian Samis scored once and assisted on two and Clarence Stephen- son, Lee Steeves and goaltender Shawn Parker each had single assists to complete the Phan- tom attack. For the Comets, it was Bill Weisflock scoring twice and a single to Dave Dickson. Assists went to Ken Davison, Willy Ed- wards and Doug Bache. Game three was a classic "blowout" as the Monsma Chargers dominated the J&D Hawks 9-4. Duane Bronson hit a career high with five goals, along with Bill Bridge with two, and Tony Oxley and Jason Warner with ryl Cooper, Louise Pilkey, Barb own, (back) Paul Cooper, coach, thy Archibald, Kim Owen, Janice singles, to lead the Chargers to their first victory. Game four rounded out week one's exciting action as the Fitz- gerald Clippers edged the Tay- lor Aces 5-3 in an end-to-end battle. Larry Pilkey led the Clippers with three goals and a single as- sist. Doug Bronson and Tom Patton also found the twine to give the Clippers their first vic- tory. John Delorme, complete with "brand new skates", had three assists, Patton had a pair and single helpers went to Pil- key, Derek Fitzgerald and Bill "Rock" Owen. Eagles eliminated Greenbank Gamblers edge Antrim Eagles 3-1 in playoff action The Greenbank Gamblers got past a major hurdle last Thurs- day night in Greenbank as they downed Port Perry Antrims by a 3-1 score. Greenbank pitching, which has been worn thin by injuries to Mark Goreski and Jim Chil- vers received a major lift when lefty Mark Goreski (sore shoul- der and all) tossed a very effec- tive five hitter at the Port Perry club and eliminated them from the Oshawa City & District playoffs. Not that the Antrims didn't have their chances as they had men on base in each of the sec- ond, third, fourth and seventh innings but Goreski would bear down and retire the side. Dur- ing the game he retired 12 bat- ters via the strikeout route while John Annis on the Port Perry mound struck out seven Gamblers while allowing seven hits. : The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third when Greg Newell tripled home Tre- vor Till with a blast off the right field fence to give Greenbank a 1-Olead. In the fifth inning Tre- vor Till hit a two out line drive home run to score Steve Dur- ham ahead of him to run the score to 3-0. In the seventh inning Port For the fuel boys, Al Bonner had a pair of replies with a sin- gle to John Kotarba. Sponsor, Wayne Taylor notched two as- sists with singles credited to Bob Beacock, Rick Campbell and "Legend" Sheehey. The final game of the day saw Harrison Blazers defeat Cran- dell's Gamblers 3-1. This match proved to be most exciting as both teams had numerous chances to gain the first victory of the seagon, as the spectators cheered on their favorites. Blazer scorers saw John Har- man, Darcy Milligan and Larry Jackson each notch their first of the season. Assists were spread around as Harman, Milligan, Steve Churchill, Marvin Ste- venson and, of course, Jim Beat- ty all figured in the scoring race. The lone Gambler tally saw Henry Forderer score from Carl Durham and Steve Groves. With the league celebrating its 14th season, game times have been moved back to the early morning to satisfy the user groups. Our league spon- sors this season include: Cran- dell's Tavern, Compton Cable Perry threatened on hits by Doug Seeley, John Butler and Steve Connors and scored a run but with two men on base, and two out, Goreski got Mike Mof- fatt to fly to centre field to end the game. This sets the stage for this Thursday night in Greenbank Park when the Gamblers will host the Scarborough Royals in another sudden death game at 8:15 p.m. with the winner meet- ing the Oshawa Flying Squir- rels for the league champion- ship. During the Port Perry - Gam- blers game last week the Green- bank crow, who faithfully at- tends each Gambler game was in rare form much to the amuse- ment of the large crowd in at- tendance. In the sixth inning the crow (who was playing deep shortstop at the time) was loor- ing directly at a Todd Wilbur hot grounder but the Gambler shortstop, Greg Newell made a fine play to throw out the run- ner and save the crow. This weekend Greenbank will be in Brantford at the O.A.S.A. Double "A" Senior Playdowns with their first game on Saturday at 9 a.m. at the Wayne Gretzky complex against the Davisville All-Stars from Toronto.
