Peter Hvidsten Port Perry Star Scaffolding is becoming com- mon place in downtown Port Perry this summer as both ends of Queen St. have been flanked with towering steel structures. Most recently, the Re/Max office at the corner of Queen and Water St. has been shroud- ed with thousands of steel rods woven together into a structure rising 40' high along three sides of the building. LIL 1B2 (905) 985-9695 Fax: (905) 985-9706 1-800-667-8957 told the Port Perry Star last week the restoration project on the 110-year-old building should take about one month. The historic three-storey building, which was constructed following the great fire of 1884 which wiped out the entire downtown, is in need of a new roof and windows. Mr. Latrielle said the original cedar shingles are still on the building and they will be replaced with new cedar shin- gles, which he hopes will last another 100 years. In addition to a new roof, 19 new windows will be installed, trim, cornice moldings and gable ornaments reconstructed and the old wooden internal eavestrough which was torn out about 50 years ago, will be replaced. Following the reconstruction of the building it will receive a fresh coat of paint. The entire project, which has been awarded to local contrac- tor Steve Snider Construction will cost in excess of $50,000 and will take about 30 days to complete. The scaffolding alone took four days to erect at a cost of almost $8,000. Mr. Latrielle said he chose Mr. Snider for the project because of his quality workman- ship, and the fact he has experi- ence working on old buildings. Mr. Snider started his career in Kingston where he worked for a contractor who restored mt wat wap at | old buildings in the historic city. Mr. Latrielle said there were J.
