Starting with the early flow- ering glory of the snow (chiono- doxia), Snowdrops (galanthus), scilla, crocus and following with daffodils and tulips, continual bloom will delight the senses. Follow these planting point- ers for a fall attack of spring fe- ver. Planting large bulbs in groups of at least five or more and swirling masses of smaller bulbs are effective in any land- scape. General rule of thumb is to plant bulbs at a depth of two to three times the bulb height. Plant pointed side up. With quality bulbs, fertilizer is not necessary in the first year, but once established a fall fertilizer is recommended. "The moderating temper- atures allow fall also to be a time of greens--in the garden," said David W. Sams, a garden- ing specialist with the Agricultural Extension Service at the University of Tennessee. "Green, leafy vegetables are excellent sources of vitamins, minerals and fiber," he said. "They grow as well or better in the fall as in the spring, and frequently produce into winter." Among the greens that can survive considerable frost are turnips, collards, kale, mustard, Swiss chard and spinach. Harvest them leaf by leaf so the plants can renew them- selves. Turnips have the addi- tional advantage of producing edible roots. "To grow fall greens," the gar- dening specialist said, "fertilize as with a spring garden, or broadcast about a half pound of ammonium nitrate per 100 square feet of garden area."Ir- rigate before planting to supply moisture and water weekly if it doesn't rain. Control weeds while they're small with frequent cultivation.
