The program is being administered to Grade 7 stu- dents by the Durham Region Health Department with fund- ing from the Ontario Ministry of Health. Hepatitis B is caused by a vi- rus which can permanently damage the liver, and is the world's leading cause of liver cancer. More than 300 cases of hepatitis B are reported each year in Ontario and many more cases are not reported. Some people get only a flu- like illness and recover quickly when they are infected with hepatitis B, so the disease is not discovered. Some of these peo- ple will then be carriers for hep- atitis B, and give the disease to others. During a three year period there were over 50 cases of hep- atitis B reported in Durham Re- gion. There is no cure for hepati- tis B, but it is preventable with vaccine. Three shots in the arm - over a six month period pro- vides life-long protection. A person can get hepatitis B by coming into contact with in- fected blood or from body or ear piercing and tattooing equip- ment that is dirty. Sharing nee- dles or being accidentally struck by used needles puts a person at great risk for hepati- tis B. One can also get hepatitis B from living with or having sex with an infected person. Grade 7 students have been targetted for this new program because the vaccine will give them protection well before the age at which most high risk ac- tivity begins. All Grade 7 students will hear presentations from the Health Department which be- gan on Sept. 19 that explained hepatitis B and the vaccine which prevents the disease. Parents and guardians are in- vited to attend a community for- um on the evening of Oct. 3 to receive the same information and to have their questions ad- dressed.
