NATIVE PERSPECTIVE ~ (905) 852-7848 I _ETTERS Council should investigate truck purchase To the Editor: I am somewhat puzzled by the contents of the article re the town pumper. In my experience working with trucks and being involved in the frame lengthen- ing of quite a number, particu- larly in the days when the choic- es of wheelbase was quite limited, I never encountered a frame that failed after length- ening. I'm trying to envisage why this one cannot be repaired, un- less it is badly warped. I pre- sume that those who made that decision were qualified, and that a second opinion was sought. Puzzling also was the prob- lem of replacement. As the pumper equipment with tanks, et al, is a separate package and can be moved from one chassis to another, why not just pur- chase a chassis of the proper size, with power takeoff, and transfer the package. All the chassis parts would then be new. Can't keep up with price esca- lation but I would be surprised if the cost would be $80,000. In any event, I am much sur- prised that upgrading a truck should cost $80,000. Was every- thing to be replaced? I'm sure that people involved in the transport business would not spend near that amount to up- grade a unit, it would be scrapped and a new one pur- chased. I would be prepared to sit down with someone (or ones) with similar experience to mine, review all relevant mate- rial, and submit an opinion. Council can not be expected to be experts on every thing, and so qualified advice should be looked for from more than one source, which I'm sure, in most instances, they do. 'A.C. Clifford, Port Perry Dog bylaw is necessary in township To the Editor: This is in reply to "Proud To Be A Dog Owner" (Sept. 13). I whole-heartedly agree with the dog bylaw. My life is a very busy one. My husband and I have no pets of our own because we have many other responsi- bilities (two small children in- cluded) and decided not to make a pet one of them at this time. Our yard is entirely fenced, but this does not stop roaming dogs from jumping into it and doing their business here. In a very unfortunate inci- dent, and with respect to the in- volved individuals, I will make this very vague. A dog attacked a young boy on our street, send- ing him to the hospital. The dog was destroyed. Control your animals, be re- sponsible and have respect for others. I think if you look close- ly, this is the message you will see behind the very legitimate "dog bylaw." I wanted to keep this letter a pleasant one and to add a little humor upon my husband's sug- Durham College is now accepting applications for This tuition free program will provide individuals with the opportunity to investigate career options while upgrading their academics in Mathematics and Communications. Few will reveal the fact that we have had a "country within a country" for 127 years. One hundred and twenty-seven years of political turmoil. Quebecers are just that....Quebecers first, Canadi- ans second. They have a Nation- al Assembly and Napoleonic laws while the rest of Canada has British Common law. When Rene Levesque defeat- ed Robert Bourassa, Canada's largest newspaper called Bou- rassa "the most hated man in Canada." Has the name been re- placed with Parizeau? From Meech Lake to the refe- rendum, voters sent a clear message to the politicians. The stare tactics and lavish spend- ing failed to sway thinking Ca- nadians. Quebec had cried wolf too many times to be believed, give us everything we want or we'll break up the country. With the Bloc Quebecois in parliament plotting the break- up of Canada aided and abetted by the PQ in Quebec, can separ- ation be stopped by massive in- "fusion of money by Ottawa? It has worked in the past...will it work again? Ottawa must stand firm...No to Sovereignty assoc. - and No to use of the Canadian dollar. What Quebec wants is more power. One brave premier at the Charlottetown accord said "Power is what its all about." Pierre Trudeau said it all in one sentence, "Quebec sets the agenda and the rest of Canada follows." Like sheep to the slaughter. How much more political wrangling with Quebec are Ca- nadians prepared to take? Haven't we had enough? Is 127 years not long enough to face re- ality? We faced the terrorism of the FLQ and the murders, the mail box and other bombings, the turbulence of the Levesque era. A country like a family divided cannot stand. Let's face it: when divorce is inevitable let's get it over with. Its better to remain friends than hate. No more catering to Quebec's demands, no more round the mulberry bush. No more wasteful spending on con- stitutional wrangling. Let's get it over with! Enough is enough. Sincerely, Dean J.
