"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, Sept. 20, 1994 - 17 SPORTS Curtain falls on Gamblers' season For the most part of the Greenbank Gambler's Fastball season, 1994 was shaping up as one of the premier years for an organization that has experi- enced many successes in the | past 15 years. N But in the last six weeks the injury jinx finally caught up to the Gamblers and hit them where it hurts the most, in the pitching dept. First Jim Chilvers was side- lined for the season in early Au- gust due to a water skiing acci- dent and with the pitching load fully falling on the shoulders of Winchester Arms host Whitby Pumas On Thursday, Sept. 15, the Winchester Arms team hosted Whitby Pumas in the first round of playoffs at the Scugog Soccer Fields. The playoffs are single knockout so, in order to advance, the Arms girls had to win. Early in the first half, Whitby took the ball deep into Winches- ter's end and then crossed the ball in front of the goal where Debbie Hamilton headed the ball into the Arms' net for an early 1-0 lead for the Pumas. This early goal seemed to bring the best out of the Win- chester team as they played stronger from this point on. Many fast breaks were turned aside by the Whitby goalie who made good saves to keep her team ahead. At the 20 minute mark, Win- chester's Lisa Bonser broke in alone and this time made no mistake as she knotted the score at 1-1. The Arms continued to force the play and at the 27 minute mark Sara Cosway drove the ball behind the Whitby goalie to give her team a 2-1 lead. The balance of the half had many good plays but the score at half time was 2-1 for Winchester. At half time break it was evi- dent that the Arms girls wanted the game and they weren't avout to letit get away. Winchester played an ex- tremely strong second half and controlled the play and continu- ally forced the play in the Whit- by end of the field. The Arms goalie had only to make one save in the second half, a sure sign that the team wanted this win. Final score 2-1 for Winchester. All team members are to be congratulated for their strong team effort. Semi-final game is Thursday, Sept. 22 in Ajax. This should be another thriller. To all the girls - Leanne, Emi- ly, Heather, Lisa, Sara, Shaun, Amy, Paula, Kim, Cate, Nicole, Tara, Yvette - Keep up the good work! Mark Goreski, the Gamblers were in big trouble when Gore- ski came up with a sore shoul- der. However, Goreski continued to pitch and last Thursday night in Greenbank Park he pitched well enough to win as he held the Scarborough Royals to only two runs, but the Gam- blers (who played well defen- sively) could not solve the pitch- ing of the Royals Blair McBratney and were shut out by a 2-0 score and eliminated from the City League Playoffs. Greenbank were the 1993 league champions and finished in first place during the 1994 regular season but the loss to Scarborough puts Oshawa Fly- ing Squirrels and Scarborough Royals in this year's final. This past weekend saw the Gamblers in Brantford for the O.A.S.A. Men's "A"-"A" Cham- pionship and while the team played excellent defense they failed to get the key hits that would give them a shot at the Ontario Senior title. Game one saw Greenbank de- feat the Toronto Davisville All- Stars by a 3-1 score led by Tre- vor Till's two hits and Don Bea- ton's bases loaded double. Game two the club wasted a two hit pitching performance by Mark Goreski as they dropped a 1-0 decision to Oakville. Gore- ski walked two batters in the first inning and Oakville scored the only run of the game on a two out single up the middle. Goreski stopped them cold after the first inning but Greenbank failed to score and left seven men on base, including a bases loaded situation. Game three against the host Brantford Tornadeos, looked like a sure win for the Gamblers as they gunned down the third out at home plate in the seventh inning with a 5-4 lead. Catcher Paul Goreski blocked the plate and applied the tag which would end the game, but the umpire saw the play differently and called the runner safe to tie the game at 5-5. A major dispute followed (in- cluding some Greénbank coach- ing ejections) but the game. went into extra innings and in the bottom of the tenth inning Brantford .pushed across the winning run for a 6-5 victory and Greenbank was eliminat- ed. In this game the Gamblers out hit Brantford by a 10-5 mar- gin but they couldn't come up with the key hits that would have moved them into conten- tion for an Ontario champion- ship. However, on this entire sea- son the Greenbank Club could not be too disappointed even though they missed out on some of their goals and expectations. So its a six month rest for the Gambler players before the 1995 season rolls around next April when the call goes out again...."Play Ball." 2 Sports sol "SERVICE IS OUR # Ww gtott® Friday September 23rd & Saturday, September 24th Jofa Helmet and Mask $69.95 Victoriaville Hockey Pants $89.98 - $99.95 Bicycle Helmets Ball Goves & Bats 50% OFF 50% OFF DRAWS EVERY HALF HOUR Te L(V] oe [e IVARY=To) [144] TQ 20 LI) ([o TIC Te Tol [Sl W=To ) EVVT=Te 1 (1 60 e Ball Gloves GRAND PRIZE DRAW J AT 4 To Ta To 1 VRC TT) (oTe de Tel sT=Te RUC IVI TR €T{=1 p43, Aluminum Stick 1894 SCUGOG ST., UNIT 10 PORT PERRY, ONT (905) 985-2839 fax 985-4664 NAME 311 BINS Fill Out Draw Slip Below, No Purchase Required Drop Off at our New Store!
