ttt 18- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, Sept. 20, 1994 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" --_-- SPORTS Exciting end-to-end action in mens' hockey league EE Nr FT IR Ie n+ YA py By John Wally Nesbitt It took 16 racing weekends, plus a couple more for good measure, (literally), but the sea- son at Mosport International Speedway has finished and the championships have been de- cided. As we reported earlier, Black- stock's Daryl Leatherdale claimed the Late Model Sports- man crown for the second time in four years while Dwight Brown made it two champion- ships in a row by adding the Late Model trophy to last year's Street Stock award. In the final night of action at the Speedway, Andy Warbutton was finally able to nail down the 1994 Street Stock title, ending a season-long battle that saw Jim Rossiter and Glen Fricker come up just short, the three top driv- ers separated by only 28 points. Rick Boucher of Oshawa ended the season in fourth place with Nestleton's Dave Lee rounded out the top five. In the ThunderCar class, it was Doug To ote accepting the champion's laurels at the fi- nal checkered flag, but a post race inspection deemed the Oshawa driver's Camaro to be illegal. A crash three weeks earlier had seriously damaged Todg- ham's racer and although re- pairs made the car race worthy, a shortened, and therefore ille- gal, wheelbase was not noticed until the final event was com- pleted. For this discrepancy » | Todgham was disqualified from the evening's activities and his oa 3% Ne pez points were stripped from the season total. Benefitting from the infrac- tion was Janetville's Dwayne Glasbergen who, as a result, be- came Mosport's newest Thun- derCar champion. Todgham was able to hold on to the runner-up position, edg- ing out Oshawa's Rob Fulton by a mere two points. Looking back on the past four. month's of racing at the Speed- way, track manager Wayne Fer- guson seemed "relatively satis- fied." "Our fields were slightly smaller this year, mainly due to the overall financial situation," offered Fergie, "but I believe that the calibre of racing has improved and has become much more competitive. I think our tightening of the ruleshashad a positive influence on this as well." As for next year, the four reg- ular divisions will again be fea- tured and Mosport is "very seri- ously looking at" an open- wheeled Modified class. Stay tuned. Just a couple of quick notes to wrap up: 1. The rules committee is meeting to set the standards for next season and track officials hope to have the regulations in place in time for the year-end banquet which will be held at... 2. the Bowmanville Recrea- tion Complex on Nov. 19. Inter- ested parties can get tickets from TJT Racing Enterprises in Oshawa or through Wayne Fer- guson at the Mosport offices. While many players found this weekend rather busy due to the Men's Final Tourna- ment, the second week of action continued to impress the fans as all games thir week fea- tured exciting end-to-end action. Game one was a real treat for the "early bird" spectators as John Robertson scored with a mere six seconds on the clock to give the Monsma Chargers a 2-2 tie with the Crandell's Gamblers. Both teams kept the goaltenders on their toes as they looked to improve their positions in the overall stand- ings. Paul VanCamp had the other marker for the Monsma boys and Jason Warner, Bill Bridge, Tony Oxley and Bob Lee all notched single assists. Crandells had-goals from Ken Jeffrey and Carl Durham. Single helpers went to Henry Forderer, Dave Bourgeois, Robert Evans and + Mark Decosta. Game two saw the final period get a little tense between the J&D Hawks and the Har- rison Blazers. It was the Hawks taking a one goal lead into the final frame on a goal by none other than sponsor Dennis Lycett, from ~ co-sponsor Joe Curran and fellow tradesman Keijo Kinnunen. However, with the penalties served, it was the Blazers who turned up the gas to "squeak out" a 2-1 victory with just 39 seconds re- maining to play Larry Jackson scored the first Blazer goal with Darcy Milligan getting the thrilling winner. Assists for the Blazers went to Milligan, John Harman, Richard Sakanashi and of course, Jim Beatty! Look for another close match between these two teams when they link up on the ice later this season. Game three found short bench strength doesn't always spell defeat as the few but mighty Van World Sharks rallied together to hand the Taylor Aces a 7-5 lesson. Phil Cochrane led the Shark attack with five points on three goals and two assists. Wayne Fox also had a big day as he counted a pair of goals along with a pair of assists. Sponsor, Mike "Tate" Adam along with Steve Conners finished the scoring to give the Sharks their first victory. Adam also had a pair of assists with singles to Scott Davis, Ivan Geer and "At-a-boy" Reg Templeman. Rick Campbell led the Aces with a goal and three assists. Todd Wilbur found the twine twice while Bob Beacock and Mike Kane add- ed singles. Sponsor, Wayne Taylor had two assists while single helpers went to Al Bon- ner, Dave Brownson, Fred Randell and "Leg- end" Sheehey. Game four saw the Pizza Delight line of John Mackey, Bill Foote and Bob Beveridge put on a scoring clinic as the Devils downed the Compton Comets 6-2. Foote notched a goal and four assists for the big five point Sunday made famous last week by Duane Bronson! Mackey had two and two while Beveridge counted two and an assist. Mike "Disco" Driscoll with another "awesome" blast, and single assists to Brian "Red" Stevenson and Steve Dunn completed the Pizza scoring. Comet replies came from Mike McQuade and Bill Weisflock. Tom Barnes had two as- sists with a single to McQuade. Doug Bache hit the scoresheet with his first penalty of the . ear! d The final game of the day saw the Pine- ridge Phantoms down the Fitzgerald Clip- pers 3-1. Wonders never cease as Lee Steeves found the net! Bill VanCamp and Steve Fox also had single tallies. Fred Moffatt had two assists while Jim Fowler, Brian Samis, and again this week, goaltender Shawn Parker had single helpers. For the Clipper Crew it was Harvey Wil- liams from Bill "Roc" Owen and Derek Fitz- gerald away at the ball diamond for this match, the next time these two teams face each other later in the season should be a game that hockey enthusiasts won't want to miss! Now that the skating legs are returning, a number of interesting rivalries are already forming to make this year's S.H.L. a real crowd pleaser!
