The 1993 flight of 18 Canada geese, led south by Mr. Lishman in an ultra-light aircraft, attracted worldwide attention for Operation Migration. The organization's work will soon be expanded to include other species of birds whose instinct for annual migration has been lost. "It looks like a life-long career now," Mr. Lishman, just back from an early-morning training flight with his flock over the fields of Nestleton, said Friday. "It's aim, basically, is to help establish migratory birds back in traditional migration routes," said Joe Duff, who will fly with Mr. Lishman when Operation Migration takes off, probably later this month. "There are probably greater than a million Canada geese in Ontario that don't migrate," he added. Many other species -- such as the crane, which will be the focus of an Operation Migration effort in the future -- have also lost touch with their migratory heritage, but could be taught, he added. Accompanying the curious flock of 39 geese and ultralights will be a camera plane, affixed with a suspended 35 mm cam- era. Mr. Lishman and his asso- ciates have entered into a deal with Columbia Pictures that will see them taking extensive footage of a future flight. The segments will be incorporated into a feature film. The contract 1s without doubt the result of the extensive cov- erage given the story last year, most particularly a segment on ABC television's 20/20 program. This year's trip is a dry run for the new plane; the serious filming starts next flight, said Mr. Lishman. He plans to take off at the end of September -- probably around the 29th -- and begin the 600 km journey to Airlie, Virginia, the first leg in a flight that will carry the flock further south. But the final destination has not yet been decided. The group will fly about 50 km at a stretch, stopping at landing strips along the way. Most of the airfields welcomed the flock during their maiden flight last year, and have agreed to stopovers this year. Mr. Lishman expects to make about eight landings between Nestleton and Airlie. Geese were introduced to the ultralights, then coaxed to fly with them and, eventually, make the long journey south. A large majority of the geese who made the flight last year came back. "We really don't need any more politicians," said Mr. Shepherd, MP for Durham. "We can't afford it." Mr. Shepherd was among those who appeared before the Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission after its initial report, outlining proposed changes, came out in February. Durham would see substan- tial changes under a realign- ment proposal, losing Uxbridge In the meantime he, his flock and his friends spend the days preparing for the end of the month. Three groups of geese are flown twice a day, making for six flights daily, said Mr. Duff, a photographer and avid ultralight pilot. "It's a lot of work," he said. Shepherd opposed to boundary 'changes that will mean more MPs Township but gaining Brock Township, with some realign- ments in north Oshawa. The commission's activities have been suspended until June of 1995 while parliament decides what changes, if any, are to be made in electoral rep- resentation in Canada. Mr. Shepherd said he hopes the commission can "put an arithmetical formula in there to actually freeze the number of politicians" while addressing riding boundary concerns.
