Durham Regional Police said more than $20,000 worth of damage was re- ported as a result of the spree, which saw a number of golf carts stolen from an area course and driven to a cottage, which was entered and trashed. The five carts were stolen around midnight last Satur- day (Sept. 10) from the Fox- ridge course on Reach St. in Uxbridge Township, said Sgt. Ken Hudson of 26 Divi- sion in Port Perry. They were driven around the course and then somehow across the township line into Scugog, where they were parked at a cabin on Ward Rd., east of Durham Regional Rd. 23. The interi- or of the cabin was ran- sacked, he said. Around 9 in the morning Sunday (Sept. 11) police ar- rived at the cabin and picked up five male young offenders, said Sgt. Hudson. "A subsequent investiga- tion led to about ten youths being involved and total damage of $20,000," he said. Grits will stick to economic The election of the Parti Quebecois in last Monday's Quebec election won't cause the federal Liberals to sway from the course they've set, the local MP predicts. Durham MP Alex Shepherd said last week the government vowed during the 1993 election campaign to place the economy first, and will continue to do that. "We will carry on with our legislative agenda, and try and put things in place to make this a more prosperous country," he said. Mr. Shepherd said last Wednesday the mood in Ottawa was upbeat, despite the election two nights previous of Jacques Council will consider community opinion on park: Hall Mayor tells 75 at Blackstock meeting to send submissions to council By Jeff Mitchell Port Perry Star Blackstock residents opposed to the sale of parkland in the hamlet to fund fairgrounds improvements may be able to sway a council decision on the matter, says Scugog's mayor. Howard Hall told those in attendance at a public meeting in the Blackstock community centre hall Wednesday night (Sept. 14) they ought to arrive at a consensus and deliver their message to the council. "I've heard a message," he told the 75 or so people in the hall after listening to almost two hours of debate. Most of the people in atten- dance voiced opposition to a plan to sever a parkette in the north end of the hamlet and sell the new lots for houses in an effort to come up with the township's $100,000 contribu- tion toward $300,000 worth of upgrading at the fairgrounds. Work would include upgrading and lighting of ball diamonds, extensive repairs to the septic system, and general improve- ments. At the same time, a popular sentiment was that the improvements should proceed, but on a smaller scale and with a different funding scheme. "If the community doesn't want this major improvement to the fairgrounds, it won't be done," said the mayor. "If that's Parizeau and his separatist PQ. The fact that the provincial Liberals drew almost the same amount of the popular vote as the PQ shows support for sepa- ratism isn't that strong, he said. "I think the average voter didn't feel he was voting for separatism," said Mr. Shepherd. "There wasn't a strong show- ing for separatism. We're not going to pander to that cause." Never the less, election of the PQ will provide fuel for sep- aratists in Quebec, and the Bloc Quebecois in Ottawa. Christie to seek third term Scugog Regional Councillor Yvonne Christie said Monday morning she will be seeking a third term when voters go to The announcement brings to an end that Mrs. Christie, a six-year veteran in the regional councillor's seat, would take a run at Mayor Howard Hall in this year's municipal vote. She said Monday she feels she can be most effective in her "There were multitudes of people expecting I'd do something else, I'm sure," she allowed. "I honestly looked at where I Mrs. Christie said she has learned the ropes at both township and regional councils well, and has consistently been a strong voice for the township at the region. The meeting was organized by Blackstock resident Fred Ford, who said he is opposed to the sale of the parkette, but is in favor of some improvements to the fairgrounds. He said the small park, on Greensboro near Durham Rd. 6%, is an resource that's appre- ciated by nearby residents and their children. Small improve- ments would make the park more attractive and well-used, he said. Mr. Ford added that if the community's consensus dictated going ahead with the council plan, he would abide by it. "I don't want to see it sold but I'm not going to stomp my feet and hold my breath until I turn blue if people just let it go," he said, adding he felt a meeting was necessary to judge public opinion. "I didn't really feel the public was being asked their opinion of selling off a park to improve another park." Residents in attendance, asked to sign a sheet stating their opinion, voted about 45- 14 against selling the parkland in Blackstock's north end. But Rik Davie, a bantam coach with the Cartwright minor ball association, warned stalling the plan for diamond improvements would mean a agenda: MP ment in Quebec," said Mr. Shepherd. The association's executive has officially stated its support for the plan, submitted to coun- cil by the parks and recreation committee. Speaking most adamantly against the plan to sever the parkette was Paul McKenna, whose family has lived on the lot abutting the park for just over a year. "There is no way we are going to let this go through," he said, vowing legal challenges if the severances and rezonings to create residential lots go through. "We'll take it that far." He added, however, that he would be willing to discuss alter- natives to the plan. Mayor Hall urged Mr. Ford to act as the community's spokesman and bring the views expressed Wednesday night to a future council meeting, likely Oct. 17 The council has applied for jobsOntario funding, which would cover about half the esti- mated cost of the project, set at more than $300,000. A commit- tee recommendation called for creation of the three building lots in hopes they would raise $100,000 toward the cost of the project. Mayor Hall said that if the town cannot match the provin- cial government's funding, the jobsOntario money will be gone. ~ Durharm Stearn Cleaning | pHoLSTERY 3M Scotchguard LOOSE RUGS BROADLOOM KARATE Men ~ Women ~ Children ¢ Academic Improvement e INTRODUCTORY COURS, 19 05 Karate before MATTHEW SAYS | "KARATE IS FUN" REGISTER NOW!
