"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" JE PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, Sept. 27, 1994 - 13 Fire truck's frame defective From Page 1 light two weeks ago, when the council met for the first time after a summer break. Mayor Howard Hall said an emergency meeting of the township fire committee had been called after it was discovered that one of the fire department's tanker trucks, which was due to be retrofitted with new equipment, was discovered to have a struc- tural flaw in its frame. The chief said Monday he quickly decided to take the truck out of service. "I took that truck off the road for the safety of the firefighters who ride in it," he told council Monday afternoon. Since early September, the chief has been investigating obtaining a new truck. He has looked at buying a used truck from one of the Metro depart- ments, and buying a demon- strator vehicle. Neither has panned out. But he has obtained quotes from a company that will lease the township a vehicle with a buy-out option at the end of a three-year term for around $175,000; the township had banked $80,000 for the retrofit and can put that amount toward the new truck. A truck could have been bought for less money, "but that truck won't be produced and finished until the summer of 95," said the chief. "I need a truck tomorrow, or yesterday." The situation -- and the We carry everything you need to go "Back To School" at the Port Perry Star OFFICE CENTRE 188 Mary Street, Port Perry 985-7383 financing dilemma -- prompted Councillor Marilyn Pearce (Ward 2) to call for more fiscal accountability from the fire department. She said a five-year plan of major capital expenditures would prevent unforeseen costs from cropping up. But Councillor Gadsden argued the chassis problem was completely unexpected and couldn't have been foreseen. For the time being Scugog Township is borrowing a second truck from Pickering.
