Vol. 128 No. 45 Copy 65¢ 61¢ + 4¢GSD Group plans to raise awareness of residents for Waste Reduction Week Concerns about the environ- ment have compelled a group of Scugog residents to take action, beginning with Waste Reduction Week next month. "A couple of us have been talking about this since the spring," said Janet Banting, who is spearheading the effort to make Waste Reduction Week a success in the township. "So far we're small," she added. "I don't think we'll tackle anything major, but these peo- ple feel a need to get something going." Waste Reduction Week, begun a decade ago by the Recycling Council of Ontario, is aimed at raising awareness on 1ssues of waste management and recycling. People are encouraged to take measures to reduce the amount of garbage they produce during the week, and the hope is that good house- hold habits will be formed and continued. Ideas to promote the week in Scugog are being kicked around by the group right now, Turn to page 3 t -- debentures -- Require new fire truck now Chief tells councillors By Jeff Mitchell Port Perry Star Scugog's top fire official made a plea Monday afternoon for funds to buy a new fire truck, after one of the township's vehicles was abruptly pulled off the road earlier this month. "I'm in dire straits," said Fire Chief Don Steele. "I'm charged to look after persons and property, but I can't do it with what I've got." Councillors voted in favor of a resolution calling on township administrator Earl Cuddie to investigate means of financing the new vehicle, which could be built and delivered to the township by January of 1995. But it's not a straightforward purchase. Mr. Cuddie explained to councillors they can't commit a future council to expenditures -- the current council's mandate expires with nomination day for the municipal elections Oct. 14 -- but that they could in all likelihood issue debentures for the purchase. "You cannot commit another council to funds unless you make arrangements for it," said Mr. Cuddie. He added that the which see investors buying portions of the loan to the township and being paid interest -- might not have to be issued by the next council if other means of financ- ing the fire truck purchase can be found. Councillor Ken Gadsden (Ward 3) pushed for a resolution to instruct the clerk to find a legal means of making the pur- chase and pursuing it, citing the dire need for a new fire vehicle in the township. That way, "We've met our legal requirement, and we haven't waffled on a tough deci- sion," he said. Councillor Dietlein said Monday afternoon he won't be seeking re-election after learn- ing he will have to begin his fight against cancer again. "A week and a half ago I had a check-up with a CATscan," he told his fellow councillors. "And they found I had a regrowth of Hodgkins disease." Councillor Dietlein, 37, made the decision not to run again despite announcing his intention to do so last month. "I was hoping to run again," he said. "...I'm sorry to disap- point all the people who were counting on me." He added he will begin intensive treatment soon, and will likely have to ask for a leave of absence from his coun- cil duties. from9a.m.-4p.m. "Time To Give" theme of Thanksgiving food drive Operation Scugog wants to restock its shelves during the Thanksgiving "Time To Give" Food Drive.
