Very near by, two of the Tall Ships were still there and were tied up. During the evening a well lighted large ship passed by with an evening of party goers. I understand for $22 per person you can get aboard, have a full course steak dinner and dance for the evening. It was quite a picture toseeit goby. It brought back memories of the past when Eileen and I sailed off from To- ronto to Port Dalhousie and back. The only trouble we ran into was finding our hotel where ar- rangements had been made for us. You see, the Journey's End Hotel has a new handle to its name called Comfort Inn. We passed by it three times after people we asked told us where it was and each time we could not see the association. Finally on our fourth by-pass we noticed in small letters at the bottom of the large sign, "By Journey's End Hotel." I'm glad to report that I was not the only one who was stupid to this fact, as other members of the two families also had trouble. ~ We are only two weeks away from Thanksgiving weekend and I'm glad to report that Joan Pearce and Barry Rogers and his son are staging another vol- leyball and horseshoe tourna- ment for that Saturday, Oct. 3. Horseshoes are in the afternoon at 1:30 p.m. and volleyball is in the evening starting at 6 p.m. Everyone is welcome so get your teams and come on out to give the better weather a final salute for this season. Here in the village we are looking to purchase a 4-wheel trailer with a large tank to hold water for the flooding of our winter ice rink. Should you know of one please let us know. On the economic level this week I had the most interesting meeting with a chap who is 60 years old. He had been a factory worker all his life. Twenty-five years ago he moved to Midland and started work for a company we will call A. Later A. decided to close up shop and sell off the assets. B. purchased the assets and a number of employees were taken on with the new management called B., with all pensions and seniority dying with A. Consequently now he finds himself with only 12 years of company pension instead of 25 years. He states manage- ment would like to get rid of the old timers and get youth. This can be understood as the old hu- man machinery doesn't run as well asit once did. The government is subsidiz- ing youth with courses which they may never use or they are on unemployment insurance or welfare because of lack of work. He states - would it not be better for the company and the govern- ment to subsidize his pension cheque and he'd resign and give youth his job. It's food for thought, isn'tit? I was in a store the other day in Port Perry and a clerk asked me how long I'd been around Caesarea, Nestleton and Black- stock and I told her. She would like me to write an article as | remember these old places. | told her to watch for Paul Arcu- lus' Scugog historical facts com- ing soon. I may cover this after | read Paul's story. Thanks for asking me.
