Although the home team played just .500 hockey in the exhibition season, defeating Bowmanville, Uxbridge and Schomberg, most of the games saw the coaches trying different line combinations and were still trying to decided on a few poten- tial players. Sunday night's game turned into a goaltender's duel as both Rick Hutchinson in the Mo- Jacks cage and Brian Hoult for the Ice turned away more than 20 chances by the opposition. The Modacks did, however manage to get one past Hoult in the first on the power play as first-year Modack Mike Pigeau teamed up with veteran Todd Dennis to mark the ModJacks' first goal of the season. After a scoreless second peri- od the ModJacks netted two in the third and earned Rick Hutchinson his first shutout of the 1994-95 campaign. Todd Stirling and Ian Titter- i KELLY LOWN/PORT PERRY STAR The Port Perry MoJacks officially opened their 24th season on Sunday night against the league's newest entry, the Georgina Ice. Also pictured are the Ice captain Keith Geniole and MoJack captain Gavin Cochrane. Teams go on a scoring rampage in mens hockey the Crandell's Gamblers 4-1. Despite handed during the second and third periods, the Clip- pers controlled the game and had two goals from Larry Pil- key and singles from Doug Bronson and Derek Fitzge- rald. Al Sibbald had a pair of assists with singles going to Bill "Roc" Owen and team sponsor Carl Fitzgerald. The combination of no NHL hockey and the cool weather of October sent the league's top marksmen on a spree in the early games of this week's SHL action. Nu- merous penalties this week also indicated that pride is on the line, as the annual "Race to the Top" enters the second month of league play. Game one saw the Comp- ton Comets gain their first victory of the season over the Taylor Aces who have yet to find the win column this sea- son. The 7-2 Comet victory saw Tom Barnes with a hat trick, Ken Davison with a pair, and singles to Willy Ed- wards and, yes folks, Doug "The Snipper" Bache! Dave Dickson had three assists while Mike McQuade and Edwards notched a pair and singles went to Barnes, Bill Weisflock and Paul Goreski. For the hapless Aces, it was team rep Ken Little and team sponsor Wayne Taylor with counters. Al Bonner and Mark Pehlemann had single assists each. Don't be too quick to count the Aces cut yet as the cold weather usually brings out the best in these Taylor Fuel boys! Game two proved to be an- other scoring explosion as the Monsma Chargers "reeled in" the Van World Sharks with a 9-3 "spearing"! This puts the Monsma gang in second place with seven points and no losses, which has team sponsor Jack Monsma and rep Don Card beaming from ear to ear. Annual scoring champ Bill Bridge led the Chargers with four goals and an assist for the five point famous Sunday morning game of the week. John Robertson netted a pair and singles went to Duane Bronson, Paul Van Camp and Dave Thompson. Robert- son, Jason Warner and Brad Hurst each had two assists with singles credited to Bron- son, Van Camp, Thompson, Jim Duncan, Tony Oxley and Lee Wilbur to complete the fishing expedition! For the Sharks, playing like "minnows" Sunday, it was Wayne Fox with two goals and an assist, and a single marker from Randy Prosser. Steve Conners and Terry Bache had single help- ers but that was all the of- fence that the Van World troop could manage this week. Game three proved to be a rather spirited match as the Fitzgerald Clippers downed playing short- The only reply for the Gamblers came late in the fi- nal period as Ken Jeffrey scored from Carl Durham and Bryan Norton to spoil Billy Eade's shutout bid in the Clipper cage! Game four was billed last week as the "game of the day" as the Pineridge Phantoms and the Harrison Blazers took to the ice to settle the first place issue. As expected, the action was hot, along with the tempers, and the re- ferees earned their money keeping the game under con- trol. When the final buzzer sounded and the penalties were all served, it was the Blazers earning a 3-2 victory over the Pinendge "Sports Shop" crew! Once again, Darcy Milligan Turnto Page 17 ton scored for the MoJacks with Veith Leslie and Dennis picking up assists. The coaching staff of the Mo- Jacks is looking forward to an exiciting and challenging year as they have several veterans returning and many new and promising faces in the mix. The veterans returning to the line-up this year include goal- tender Hutchinson, Steve Sta- niland, Brad Bagshaw, Kevin Vivian, Leslie, Ian Titterton, Dennis, Jeremy Ross, Duane Empringham, Steve Laird, Ke- vin McDonald, Trevor Bremner and Gavin Cochrane. oko By the crowd in attendance for the season opener Sunday night, it looks as though the move to an earlier 7p.m. start might be what was needed to bcost attendance this season. Prior to last night's game the club paid tribute to Mother Jackson's Open Kitchens for their long-standing sponsor- ship of the team. Long-time em- ployee Colin Dodd dropped the puck tor the opening face off. Those in attendance also no- ticed the new look for the hockey club, as the new uniforms for this season were worn by the players for the first time. The team has selected its cap- tain and alternatives as de- fenseman Gavin Cochrane will be sporting the captain's shirt this season with Steve Stani- land and Todd Dennis as the al- ternates. All three are in play- ing their third year with the club. The Modacks next home game will be Sunday, Oct. 9 when the Uxbridge Bruins will bein town for a 7p.m. start. Bantam 2s win, tie The Techstar Bantams began their season on Saturday, Sept. 24 at the Civic Auditorium in Oshawa, in an exhibition con- test against the Little NHL Red Wings. The beginning of the game saw many chances but the goal- ies at both ends stood tall. The scoreless tie was broken at 13:05 in the second when Troy Campbell cut across the crease and put it in the net to make it 1-0 Techstars. A short time lat- er, at 11:18 in period two, Dan- ny Lyons scored on a beautiful setup from Brad Monsma and Travis Pickard to make it 2-0. It stayed that way until the Oshawa team finally broke" goalie Doug Short's bid for the shutout at the 11:28 mark of the third. Techstars Tie 2-2 Game two of the Techstar Bantams home and home series with the Oshawa Red Wings ended in a two all tie. This game saw many good plays and even more penalties from both teams. The Techstar goals were scored by Travis Pickard and Scott Sanderson with assists by Dave Gainey and Dan Lyons. Doug Short did a great job between the pipes for the Techstars.
