Two events have been held at the Scugog Township-owned hall since school resumed this fall, and there have been no problems, Marilyn Pearce, Councillor for Ward 2 and chair of the recreation department said last week. "The teens are doing fine at their dances," she said. "We are willing to carry on as long as there are no problems. They are being fairly well-run." The dances were begun again this fall after being disallowed last year. The municipality put a halt to the events after a num- ber of events -- including a rum- ble between local teens and out- of-town kids at the Masonic Hall -- caused damage or dis- ruption a couple of years ago. "We discontinued them for a while," said Councillor Pearce. "We just kind of took a breather from them." When the township was approached about allowing the dances this year, the council and the rec committee laid a number of ground rules -- including the presence of off- duty police officers -- for the events. "I think it's very positive," Mrs. Pearce said of the order that has governed this year's events. She added the success so far "augers well" for teens and dance organizers, who may have an opportunity to use the new community centre to be built by Scugog arena. Shepherd named vice-chair of Public Accounts Committee Durham MP Alex Shepherd has been unanimously elected vice-chair of the Public Accounts Committee in Ottawa. The 12-member, all-party committee -- it's chaired by the opposition Bloc Quebecois-- operates beyond party lines, keeping taxpayers informed on how the government spends its $162-million budget. An announcement on Mr. Shepherd's selection as vice-chair was circulated by his riding office Friday. "MPs are on this committee to represent the taxpayer, and not their party lines," Mr. Shepherd said. First elected last October, Mr. Shepherd has also been a member of the finance committee, and an associate of the industry committee in Ottawa. He will now be an associate - member of both committees. The Public Accounts Committee consists of three BQ members, two Reformers and seven Liberals. ' - J.
