With a talented lineup, why shouldn't they be? The two puck stops who will be standing tall against the rubber this year will be Kent Johnston, a vete- ran and Shane Savage a new addition to the team, who had a great season with the All- Ontario Champion Peewee Le- gionaires last year. Including Johnston, there will be six returnees to the team including Rob Murphy and Col- in Laird on the blue line. Scott Heffern, Mike Morden and Adam Smith are back to the team looking as confident as ever. Mike Heasman, who played on the All-Ontario Final- ist Bantam Bs last season, Nick Skerratt who has shown all that he's a great defenceman, being called up from the farm team this year, and Casey Van Schag- en, another member of the All- Ontario Champion Peewees make up a strong defence core. A wise man once said "De- fence is the key to a good hockey team." If this is true, watch out for these guyson theline. John Froats, Derek Tindall and Adam Hobbs, all students of Garry Geer's "The Road to the All-Ontario Cup," have signed multi-year contracts with the Country Style Bantam As. Jay Strickert, whose season last year was extremely rough is back once again. Suffering from multiple game related injuries one year ago, including a brok- en collarbone, broken jaw and a severe bitten lip, Jay has bounced right back this season not even missing a beat. Sean Hnatko, a good skater from Brooklin, and new to the Scugog area is looking good up front. Shane Norton, who was up for the playoffs last season has made his position full time this year. Shane has a lot of views on hockey and is well spoken. He said in the dressing room, "I'm against the helmet rule. It's just not for me." We've played four exhibition games with a record of three and one. Fans, we'll tell ya about two of 'em. Our home opener was against the Oshawa Black Hawks who had a previ- ous pre-season record of nine and zero. This was a good rough game with lots of hits and a lot of action. Goal scorers were Norton, Heasman, Smith (two), and Hobbs - where did he learn to shoot like that? Oh. Did I say Heasman? Beauty Mike! The fi- nal score was 5-1, us. Our next home game was on Oct. 3 against Uxbridge. We came out strong scoring the first three goals before the Bruins scored their only goal. A slight tiff occurred after Norton took a vicious elbow, from Ux- bridge player Shaun Brown, that dislodged his helmet and almost his head. Murphy was ejected for fighting, Norton for third man in/playing without a helmet, and Laird got five min- utes for dancing. Uxbridge Bruins defenceman Jason Gre- gor was asked to leave early for chewing on Murphy's fists, and Uxbridge assistant captain, Da- vid Murras, got thrown out for being Laird's waltzing partner. The final score in this one was Port Perry 8 - Uxbridge 1. Goal scorers in this one were Morden (two), Smith, Strickert, Froats, Heffern, Hnatko and Van Shag- en. This week's player profile is on second year veteran forward, Scott Heffern. Heffy's been wearing #20 on his back so far this year. He's a tough two-way player, with two goals and two assists in the last two games. With only two penalty minutes so far, Scott usually sees a lot of ice time. Scott wants you to come out to our games because "Hockey is a Canadian thing. You really should support your local teams (Country Style Ban- tams) and it's a lot of fun. A lot of fun." Come on out to the arena and support the Country Style Ban- tams. Folks, it's really good hockey, and the guys on the team would love it if we had a capacity crowd. Come on out! Semi-final playoff game was played in Ajax on Thursday, Sept. 22 against Ajax Ray's Tro- phies. Winchester Arms opened the scoring at the 20 minute mark when Emily Cosway connected on a leading pass from Shaun Gault. Ajax tied the score at 1-1 late in the first half on a play that most spectators thought was off-side, but the referee's word was law and the goal stood. The Arms played a strong sec- ond half and scored two more only to have the referee wave both goals off as he thought they were off-side. The second half ended with the score tied 1-1. The teams played a scoreless overtime and were forced to go to a shoot-out as a winner had tobe declared. In the shoot-out the Arms outscored Ray's Trophies 2-1 and were declared winners by a score of 2-1. Goals by Lisa Bons- er and Paula Reed. This win put Winchester Arms into the finals on Sunday afternoon at Kinsmen Park in Pickering against the first place " Ajax Black Angus. The Arms came to Sunday's game with only hard work and determination on their minds having been defeated twice by Black Angus. In the first half Black Angus caught a break and were able to jump into an early 1-0 lead. The gals from Winchester worked hard and played the off-side to perfection and were awarded a free kick from their half line. Amy McArthur put the ball up over everyone to Lisa Bonser who broke in alone and scored to tie the score at 1-1. The first half saw the Arms keep the pressure on but couldn't beat the Black Angus goalie and the halfended 1-1. In the second half the Arms went quickly to the attack and kept the ball in the Black Angus end. A corner kick was awarded to Sara Cosway who crossed the ball to the front of the net where Yvette Hamelinck tapped the ball into the goal for a 2-1 lead J for Port. oo. v - » - eo, Er praprapeaer EE I BE I IEEE SE EE EE EE > hn" - r Pal TON WC VN Winchester gals applied more pressure and at the 20 minute mark, Emily Cosway was able to put a left footer in to up the score to 3-1. Thanks also to Kate Lewis, even though on crutches, came and cheered her team on. The season opener for the Port Perry Peewee Legion- aires began Friday, Oct. 7 at home, agdinst Trenton. A close fought battle through- out the game, the boys came away with a 4-4 tie. Goals came from Greg Bru- ton, unassisted, Ryan McQuade, assisted by Jeff Ashton, and two goals from Steve Wygerde with assists going to Chad Lance, Braden Tarbotton and Matt Cald- well. Port racked up a total of 12 minutes in penalties while Trenton had seven. Sunday, Oct. 9 saw the Le- gionaires "talking turkey" with Lindsay Major Pee- wees. The first period ended in a 2-2 tie with Lindsay capi- talizing on penalties. Port's first goal came from Ryan McQuade - in the five hole, assisted by Greg Bru- ton. With much digging around the net and one min- ute left in the first period, Ryan scored again, unassist- ed. Second period started with Peewees battle to a 4-4 draw a goal for Port, only to be called back by a quick whis- tle. Thirteen seconds later, Nick Pelyk "stuffed" a quick wrist shot over the Lindsay goalie's glove, assisted by De- ryk Campbell. Lindsay found themselves with three players in the pen- alty box; looked like "gravy" for the Legionaires. Jeff Ash- ton let go a blistering shot from the blue line and Brad Johnston tipped it home. Play started to open up; Lindsay fought back with two quick goals to end the second period 5-4. The third period saw tired bodies sprawling eve.y- where. Lindsay added two "pumpkin pies for dessert" making the final score 7-4. Port chalked up 10 min- utes in penalties and Lind- say had six. Chris Monsma and Mike McLennan each had some fine saves between the pipes. Next game at home against Port Hope on Friday, Oct. 14 at 9:10 p.m. pS AR: NET A rTr--_
