12- PORT PERRY STAR - Wednesday, Oct. 12, 1994 "Scugog"s Community Newspaper of Choice" SPORTS i Oct. 1 dawned dark and damp. Not to be detered, the CMB fundraising committee continued with their plans to run the lob ball tournament as scheduled. Fourteen mixed adult teams had entered and all showed up to play. Rakes, shov- els, and wood shavings were employed to ready the ball dia- monds in Blackstock and Nes- tleton for play. Despite the wet weather all teams enjoyed a day of exciting ball. : «« The day was a financial suc- cess as well, raising over $1,500 from entries. Another $300 was donated by the winning team of the "A" division; bringing the to- tal raised to over $1,800. All of the officials willingly volunteered their time to help out with this fundraiser. The volunteer umpires were Bren- don Agnew, John Binning, Wayne Bradt, Dave Bradt, Brent Donnelly, Barry Hazel- don, Doug Kadawoki, Doug Lowe, Kyle Simms, Brian Sonne and Dale Stinson. The organizers, Doug Kadow- aki and Donna Drew did a fine job to ensure the day ran smoothly. The monies raised from this event are earmarked for the Fu- ture Development Fund of CMB. Monies from the fund will Cartwright ball fundraiser a success be used in the community to as- sist in the development of an- other ball diamond, and also for upgrading of existing ball dia- monds in the future. In an effort to encourage more people to get involved in the board, a motion was passed prior to the election of directors to to allow for a "minimum" of five Directors. This was passed unanimously. SELECTION OF TEAMS Discussion following the election of officers centered on how House League teams were chosen, after president Dalton read a letter asking the method be reconsidered. A petition from concerned residents suggested that teams in small communities like Greenbank and Seagrave should be cho- sen in the same manner as the PPMS teams are picked. Some parents suggested the current system causes lopsided teams because kids in the smaller communities get to play together year after year and become more skilled than the local teams who play with different players each year. But residents from Seagrave and Greenbank denied the accu- sation saying the kids don't play together every year, and they should be allowed to play in their own communities. Ron Goreski said he didn't care what system was used, but all the teams should be selected the same way to be fair. Doug Dempsey, who coached in Seagrave for more than 10 years, denied teams stay together through the system, but sug- gested cycles do occur every few years, when a team tomes together and wins consistently. "This is the only time we hear these complaints," he said. The controversy arose this past summer because one strong Greenbank team won all season long. Some coaches suggested that they couldn't field enough play- ers when the kids knew they were going to Greenbank because they knew they would lose. GOOD SYSTEM IN PLACE Carolyn Best, a long-time member of Port Perry Minor Softball said there will always be a split in opinion over the selection of teams but she didn't want to see "rep" teams develop in the house league system. "We've got a good system in place now, and I'd like to see it stay that way," she said. Gord Jones suggested that every player from Port Perry, Greenbank and Seagrave be registered, then a skill assessment program in which players are classified as Highly Skilled, Skilled or Almost Skilled could be developed. "We could then hold a draft with coaches from all communities picking players from each of the skill groups," he proposed. Mr. Jones said this system may encourage skilled players from the smaller communities to join rep teams from Port Perry as they get older. "We either have to make a change now, or every year the dis- content will arise again," he said. President Dave Dalton suggested a committee be formed con- sisting of two reps from all the interest groups to meet and dis- cuss the matter further. The meeting will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 16 at a place yet to be determined. Dave Kay reported there is a good chance PPMSA will host the OASA Convention in Port Perry on April 7, 1995. dd ld AA ds oI AVAILABLE AT PORT PERRY STAR OFFICE CENTRE 188 Mary St., Port Perry + 985-7383 « Fax: 985-3708 AR i nn ONT
