Here club president Marie Carnegie enjoys a hand with members Bonnie Davies, Harry Carnegie and Jack Davies. Duplicate bridge club celebrates 10th, seeks new members for 'fun' pastime About this time of year in 1984, a few intrepid bridge players discussed starting a lo- cal duplicate bridge club. One of them knew a qualified director who might help, (Harold Brown), another could provide the necessary equipment to start; and a third, a sympathet- ic bridge player, Kathy Kroo- nenberg, was able to arrange for the use of the banquet room at Emiel's for Mondays, afternoon and evening. And so, after some generous publicity, courtesy of John McClelland and the Port Perry Star; Harold's willing- ness to direct a group of rank amateurs; the boards provided and accommodation at Emiel's arranged, the Scugog Duplicate Bridge Club was off to a flying start and has never looked back! The first president was genial Peter Francis, who served two years. Treasurer was Mrs. Matt Dymond who (gratefully!) is still serving. Another faithful member, Doris Phinney, has been the weekly score reporter from the start. Following presi- dents and executive members have been equally dedicated, and the club members have rea- son to be proud of their record. After the first year, due largely An Adventur 65 Million Years In The Making PGS [o] SIENEQ uy to the generosity of Emiel's, the club was well off the ground, and able to launch out on their own. They rented the Prince Al- bert Hall, and have operated there ever since, on Wednes- days, at 1 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. from September through June. Memberships are reasonable; $5 for a yearly membership, lus $2 each bridge session, or 2.50 for non-members or guests. Members in turn also provide light refreshments, and the club provides coffee. The current president is Marie Carnegie, and it is to be hoped she will serve for another year. All in all the club has reason to be proud. Over the years they have donated $4,000 to the Community Memorial Hospi- tal. The Scugog Duplicate Bridge Club generates an envi- ronment of friendly informality, emphasized by the easy going and relaxed manner of Director Harold Brown. He now has sev- eral qualified helpers among the members. To celebrate the 10th anni- versary of the club, they are hosting a guest day on Wednes- day, Oct. 19 at 1 p.m. and again at 7:30 p.m. at Prince Albert Hall, 19 Jeffrey St., Prince Al- bert. After Harold's brief expla- nation on how duplicate bridge is played, visitors will have a chance to play themselves. All interested bridge players will be most welcome, and part- ners provided if needed, so don't hesitate to come alone! The club members hope to dispel the myth that duplicate bridge is difficult, or too competitive and serious. Nothing could be fur- ther from the truth at the Scu- gog Club. Perhaps the differ- ence lies in the fact that no master points can be earned, no serious competitions are held or trophies awarded. The result is sheer enjoyment of the game of bridge, in a relaxed and infor- mal environment. Why not come and see for yourself! Bridge is such a pleasant game, except when it's too seri- ous! Like when you trump your partner's ace, and he or she is furious! Our duplicate club is not like that, it's friendly and harmoni- ous; our members share a com- mon view, that criticism's odi- ous! Master points we don't award, too serious bridge we shun; our club is quite unique, perhaps, because we play for un! BRING HOME THE BIGGEST FILM OF ALL TIME!
