Sb " - "A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, Oct. 18, 1994 - 9 Police nab young offenders Two teens are charged after van Is stolen, set ablaze Two female young offenders are facing numerous charges after vans were stolen and torched in Scugog Township last week, say Durham Regional Police. Police also said there appears to be a link between the vans and a motor home that was stolen and later recovered near Blackstock during the wee hours last Friday (Oct. 14). Sgt. Ken Hudson of the Port Perry station said two officers were on patrol around 3 a.m. Friday when they passed the piton Boundary Rd. in the south end of the township and saw headlights. Officers entered the pits and found two vans, said Sgt. Hudson. One was on fire, and the other was running. Five people scattered from the scene and officers managed to apprehend two 15-year-old Outside firm called in to manage property By Jeff Mitchell Port Perry Star A third party has been called into manage the Canterbury Common housing development in Port Perry. The firm Ernst and Young will represent Mackenzie M.E.F Management. Inc. and Quorum Development Corp., whose partnership in the large project north of Port Perry has been in question after a falling-out at the end of September. The company will oversee on-site operations at the development -- three model homes stand on the property, where there are plans for more than 200 houses in a seniors retirement village that was to be set in the midst of a nine- hole golf course -- while the former partners have surren- dered access, according to Scugog Township administrator Earl Cuddie. Quorum president Mark Dawson said the company is on site after being appointed by the owners. "Their sole purpose in life is to be able to show potential purchasers homes and answer questions for potential pur- chasers until the situation between Mackenzie and Quorum is resolved," said Mr. Dawson, who added the firm was chosen by "mutual agreement." He said the two companies agreed to "back away" from the property while they attempt to settle their differences. Ernst and Young's involvement will likely be short-term, he added, explaining that the two companies may avoid a court appearance, which. was earlier thought necessary. Both sides in the dispute have been guarded about releasing details to the media, but speculation abounds that at the centre of the disagreement i is development of the golf course, a primary attraction for buyers and the munici- pality, which worked closely with developers as applications for the project were sought and granted. Mr. Cuddie said last week the golf course could be a thorny issue for the incoming council; the current council held its last meeting before elections on Monday, and no requests or information regarding the course have come from the developers. "The timing is very unfortunate in that regard," said Mr. Cuddie. "IT suspect the glitch is going to cause some hiccups until early in the new year." Mackenzie president Allan Warren, contacted last week, would not comment on the ongoing dispute. "Our position at Mackenzie is it's a private matter and we do not have any comment on it," he said. He added, though, that it's not likely a resolution to the dispute will be immediate. "These things take time. "I don't think you're going to see a lot on day-to-day basis." girls; three males fled. Investigation revealed that the van that was torched belonged to a Port Perry woman who is employed at Oshawa General Hospital. The van had been stolen from the hospital sometime after she started her shift at 7 p.m. Friday, said Sgt. Hudson. The 94 Plymouth Voyageur was extensively damaged, he said: "There was $25,000 worth of property damage involved." Two female young offenders from the Oshawa area were charged in connection with the incident: One faces three counts of possession of stolen property over $1,000 and one count of theft. the other girl is charged with three counts of possession of stolen property over $1,000, one count of theft over $1,000, and one count of breach of undertaking. Subsequent to the discovery of the vans, police investigated the theft of a recreational vehi- cle from a home on the Cartwright West Quarter Line south of Regional Rd. 19 in the early morning hours. The 87 Citation vehicle was discovered on the Quarter Line near Church St. outside of Blackstock just before 6 a.m., and more suspects were apprehended. ANNOUNCEMENT Jason Hinton, B.Sc.Phm.
