"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, Oct. 18, 1994 - 17 Several students from local public schools took part in the annual cross country run held at the Scugog Soccer Fields last week. The run, put on by S.A. Cawker Public School, saw ae participants round the soccer fields, before heading to S.A. Cawker and back along Old mcoe Road. The Novice House League in Port Perry Minor Hockey has gotten underway finally after practices and tryouts for the rep teams have been completed. The players from every team have been working hard and by the second week of play you could already see an improve- ment in passing and players trying to stay on side. In the first game of the sea- son, ReMax squared off against Port Perry Printing. This game was well played with both team's goalies coming up with good games. Kyle Geer and Jus- tin Sanders had good games be- tween the pipes. Scoring for the ReMax team were Colin Hol- ditch and Scott Lennox unas- sisted. Norm Rooney scored for the Printing team with Mike Redman picking up the assist. For the ReMax team, Brook MacKenzie and Craig Kehoe had good games on defence. Maggie Robbins and Mitchell Sauder get the good hustle award for their efforts and Jes- sie Mullins showed great stick handling and got some good shots away. For the Port Perry Printing team, Kellen Jackson and Billy Britt get the good hustle award as they picked up a couple of breakaways for their efforts. Brent Meeking displayed some good stick handling and pass- ing. In the second game of the day, Van Camp took on Haugens. This game had a little bit more scoring than the first game and was exciting to watch. Scoring for Haugens was Matthew Kamminga with four goals, Jo- seph Kozlinsky with two goals while Jeremy Morrison round- ed out the scoring with one goal. Kyle Pett and Alex Herold picked up assists. David Dekon- ing had a good game on defence. For the Van Camp team Jesse Mischitian picked up two goals with assists going to Tyler Mar- tin. Matt Menear and Darryl Copithorn picked up unassisted goals. Troy Johnson had a strong game on defence. In the second week of play, the pace was just a little bit fast- er than the first week as the players are really starting to get their skating legs in shape. The first game of the day was Port Perry Printing versus Haugens. Both goalies, Sam Bennett for Haugens and Kellen Jackson for Port Perry Printing, played very well. Chris Jackson and Billy Britt picked up assists with David McGarry picking up a hat trick. Adam Smart had a good game on defence and Jon Breen gets the good hustle award for this game. Scoring for Haugens was Matt Charron with assists go- ing to Kyle Pett and Alex He- rold. Russell Lee played very well on defence and the good hustle award goes to Justin Cot- trell. In the second game of the day it was all Jesse Mischtian for the Van Camp team as he scored five goals on the way to a 7-3 win over the ReMax team. Tyler Martin picked up two goals and two assists. Darryl Copithorn picked up two assists while Matt Whalen, Blake McLaughlin and Troy Johnson picked up an assist each. Kyle Bower played well on defence for the Van Camp team. Novice house league action Scoring for the ReMax team were Scott Lennox, Clay Train- or and Jesse Mullins. Assists went to Ryan Hockley, Robbie Waller and Kevin Dalby. Brook MacKenzie and Kristy Ashton played well on defence. Chris Milligan and Brady Gray get the good hustle award for their strong efforts. The players and the coaches of the Novice House League would like to wish Norman Roo- ney a speedy recovery 'after breaking his ankle the first game of the season. Belleville then got a go- ahead goal against Malmont cagecop D'Arcy Stephens on a 'sharp angle wrist shot. Every- thing went Belleville's way thereafter, including a fluke de- flection off our defenceman for a 6-1lead. We replied with two goals that resulted from our for- wards' speed as Trevor Weis- flock and Justin Moffatt scored superb breakaway goals. En- couraged by this, our power play unit had tremendous puck control and several good chanc- es on an opportunity late in the games second period but the Belleville goalie smothered the puck well to stymie our comeback effort. They held on against our~two- man third period power play and scored one more of their own to close out the scoresheet. "Best Effort" for the Malmont squad goes to Justin Moffatt in this game. With a little improvement in our "breakouts" and a little less chasing the puck in our own de- fensive end, our "goals against" will come down. This team will give you your money's worth in non-NHL hockey in any case. Come on out and give them your support against the al- ways tough Peterborough boys on Oct. 21 at8 p.m. The Techstars split their last two exhibition games be- fore their league started. On Oct. 7 they squared off against the Oshawa Bruins in Little Britain. The Techstars didn't seem to be up to the task and the score definately showed it. The final score was 4-0. The following day at the Civ- ic Auditorium against the Black Hawks it was a different story. They were back to their old selves and then some. The final score was 7-3 Techstars. The Techstars pre-season ended with a record of 2-1-2. On Wednesday, Oct. 12 their Techstars split games league began. Their first game was against Lindsay at home. The Techstars came out scoring and never looked back. The final score was 8-2. The goals were scored by Danny Lyons with two, Scott Sander- son, Troy Campbell, Dave Gai- ney, J.P. Copeland, Gavin Bax- ter and Ryan Puckrin. Assists from Danny Lyons and Dave Kaminga each with two, J.P. Copeland, Ian Parliament, Wyatt Park, Scott Sanderson, Gavin Baxter and Dave Gai- ney. Doug Short did a great job between the pipes as usual. Country Style Bantams drop first league game The Port Perry Country Style Donut Bantams are 0 and 1 in the regular season af- ter suffering a 9-2 loss to the Belleville Bulls on Sunday, Oct. 16. Motor City Smitty got us started, scoring off a break- away with a beauty move (from what I've heard any- ways). Shawn Hnatko gave Smitty a fine pass and picked up the lone assist. Derek Tin- dall put our final goal away, assisted by Crazy Legs Adam Smith. Shane Savage played well in the cage, but he was left stranded by his teammates. Fans, the score easily could have been closer or even went in the other direction, if we played a more "heads-up" type of game. Blades wasn't too pleased with our effort on the ice. Last practice's focal point was passing. I have a feeling that this week's practice will be directed to the finer points of skating. The team missed the talents of Jay Strickert and John Froats in this one as they were both serving suspen- sions. Colin Laird left the game early with an injury and didn't return as he was taught a lesson. "Look Out - The Boards Hurt." Rob Murphy and two Belleville Bull(ie)s were ejected for fighting, only after Port Perry goaltender Shane Savage was hit and a gathering ensued. The game got a little chippy at times and I could have sworn that I saw Tim "Dr. Hook" MacKraken out there, but it was just Tin- dall. Some good, clean hits were thrown by both teams as well. This week's player profile is on veteran goaltender, Kent Johnston. After suffering a knee injury, Kent missed 14 games last season. Still at a young age of just 14, he's look- ing better than ever this sea- son, playing great between the pipes and stopping the puck with anything he can - stick, pads, glove, blocker, or even with his head. Kent says "I hate it when my defenceman score on their own net. Wheth- er it's off their glove or skate, or if the puck rolls off their stick and into the net, I just hat it, ya know?"
