"The Doors of Port Perry" is a collection of six doorways in Scugog Township, portrayed to- getherin one picture. Mrs. Richardson began paint- ing the doors two years ago and Warren and Tracey Strong of the Framer's Gallery ap- proached her last year about making a poster format of the pictures. The Framer's Gallery is helping by marketing the art- work in area businesses as well as providing framing. The original watercolors, which include Town Hall 1873, Canadian Welcome, a Mary Street doorway, Arch Rival, a Queen Street home, Spring in Epsom, Gingerbread and Cream on Cochrane Street and OH Canada, a Riverview Drive doorway, are all owned by both Toronto and Port Perry resi- dents, none of whom own the homes portrayed. Mr. Strong expects the item to be very popular this Christ- mas as well as among tourists. Many tourists have visited his store wanting something to take home to remember their trip here, and he says this "may fill that void." "The Doors of Port Perry" graphics and Haugens, is available in posterform for $30 or can be purchased framed for between $99 and $129. which can be viewed at the Framer's Gallery, Settle- ment House, Luke's, Para- dise Bedding, RJM Photo- Local artist Karen Richardson, and Warren Strong of the Framer's Gallery display "The Doors of Port Perry", a poster collection of six doors in Scugog Township which is now for sale as a souvenir of the township. COPE offers support to adults Volunteers large part of Community Care By Kelly Lown Port Perry Star Volunteers are a vital part of Community Care and Barbara Bracken doubles as both a vol- unteer in the local office and with the COPE program. - Mrs. Bracken has been a vol- unteer with COPE for eight years and has been a staff mem- ber of its drop-in centre since its inception. COPE , a mental health pro- gram, offers support to adults with emotional or psychiatric problems. It helps them to re- main in their communities and function as effectively as possi- ble. The program offers a drop-in centre on Wednesday after- noons, a women's support group and one-on-one counselling. Mrs. Bracken has spent every Wednesday afternoon for the past eight years at the drop-in centre helping her clients deal with stress and depression through a social atmosphere in- volving games and crafts. Any person over the age of 16, who 18 under emotional stress may apply personally to the OPE program, or through their physician, social worker, public health nurse, minister or counsellor. Volunteers in the COPE pro- gram are trained in communica- tion and life skills to work with clients by providing emotional support or helping the client ac- quire and apply life skills. Before coming involved BARBARA BRACKEN with her clients Mrs. Bracken took an eight-week training course and she later took an ad- vanced training course, where she worked at Whitby Psychiat- ric Hospital. She started working for COPE simply because "they needed someone to volunteer at the drop-in centre," and she has been there eversince. When she isn't helping at the drop-in centre Mrs. Bracken is an office volunteer at Scugog Community Care. She has been on the regional board and has served as the chairman of the lo- cal committee. Again, she said a friend was a volunteer and she decided to be- come one as well, Turnto Page 9 PL 0 SNVIAGE IR ®& CARE Heating and Airconditioning Ltd. 985-4484 FALL SALES ~ Hi. Eff.
