"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, Oct. 18, 1994 - B3 Church anniversary The Burns congregation cele- brated its 145th anniversary on Sunday with the service at 10 a.m. The Rev. John Bannerman was the guest minister with Lori Gemmell, harpist, provid- ing the special music. A lunch- eon was served in the lower hall following the service. The turkey supper served at the church on Friday night was enjoyed by all who attended, and proved to be a great suc- cess. We need to commend the committee on their fine effort for all the planning and organiz- ing which has been made over the last few weeks. The Ladies Bible Class met at the home of Grace Hopkins on Wednesday night. Due to theill- ness of the president, Florence Ashton chaired the meeting. The opening hymn was "Come Ye Thankful People Come." Psalm 96 was read. The medita- tion was titled "Two Golden Days." Florence led in prayer. A poem "In Small and Simple Things" was read. The hymn "Trust and Obey," was sung. A few items of business were dis- cussed. Lexie Pettus was in charge of the program and spoke on "Friendship" and told how Ruth and Naomi, in the book of Ruth experienced God's presence, and how their lives are a good example of friend- ship. "Ruth" means friendship. Lexie closed the meeting with prayer. Bernice Gardner did the courtesies. A lovely lunch was served by the hostess. Results of the euchre party are as follows: Ladies first - Hel- en Brown, second - Jean John- ston. Men's first - Grant Bright, second - Art Richardson. 50/50 draw was won by George Harp- er. Lone hands Doris Evans and Verna Slute. Door prize win- ners were Ruby Smith and Fred Taber. Eight tables were played. Next euchre will be on Thursday, Oct. 27 at the Com- munity Centre. Ross and Diane Batten re- cently travelled to Scranton, Pa. meeting their daughter Debbie and enjoyed a few days together. We are pleased to hear that Bruce Slater is making favora- ble progress following his sur- gery in Toronto. Joan Knight is still confined in Port Perry Community Me- morial Hospital and I'm sure she is looking forward to return- ing home. We're thinking of you Joan. The mixed quartet "Decision" will be in concert at Burns Church, Sunday, Nov. 13 at 7:30 p.m. Also featured will be Ken and Elaine Heron from Bracebridge. Come and enjoy a good evening of gospel music. Have a good week! From The Hip by William Thomas is now featured in the Port Perry 'WEEKEND STAR' coming this Friday in the mail or available in newsboxes located around Scugog Twp. 3 "Many people have questions when they make prearrangements. The one that comes up most often is whether or not it's necessary to pay in advance. While it's not required, it is a good idea. By prefinancing, you are assured of today's prices. You can pay for all or a portion of the funeral. Preplanning is a thought- Jul way to show you care. Prefinancing is a way to relieve loved ones of a future financial burden."
