No one came forward to chal- lenge the Ward 3 councillor in this year's municipal election, giving him the only acclamation on the seven-position slate of councillors, regional councillor and mayor. Councillor Gadsden, who has represented the Scugog Island ward for three years, said Friday afternoon shortly after nominations for the 1994 municipal vote closed that he sees the acclamation as an endorsement of his first term on council. He added he'd like to continue on as a member of the economic development committee, which recently published a wide-rang- ing survey of opinions on devel- opment and other issues, sup- plied by township residents. ..He said the council will have to encourage balanced develop- ment, bringing about an even assessment base of residential and commercial taxpayers -- currently home owners shoulder the lion's share of municipal expenses -- and wrangling with issues like the development of the new community recreation centre. He added that the past coun- cil -- whose last meeting was yesterday -- has worked effec- tively on a number of issues, with all members bringing valu- able viewpoints to the table and avoiding acrimonious debate. Incumbent Howard Hall is being challenged by David Malcolm of Nestleton; his brother, Glenn Malcolm, also of Nestleton, has come for- ward to vie for the regional councillor's seat, currently held by Yvonne Christie. The most-contested seat in the township is Ward 1, where incumbent Ken Carruthers is facing a chal- lenge from Doug Moffatt and Barry Johnston. There will be two seats without an incumbent: Ward 5, which was created for this election and replaces the Area Councillor's position, and Ward 4, where incumbent David Dietlein has with- drawn from the race after learning recently he is expe- riencing a recurrence of Hodgkins' disease; he will undergo extensive and gru- elling treatment. He announced his intention to seek reelection in September.
