Students at Port Perry High School were read a communique from 26 Division Inspector Nancy Desjardine Monday morning, warning them that police will be out in full force next Monday night to prevent damage to property and hooli- ganism. A number of incidents that occurred on Halloween last year "never should have happened," Insp. Desjardine said in the address, presented to the kids by an officer from 26 Division in Port Perry. She warns those looking for mischief their actions "will not be tolerated this year." Among measures being taken in Port Perry: Q "old clothes" officers will be patrolling streets 0 canine units will be on duty 0 all days off for officers are cancelled so a full complement will be on duty for the evening, and Q the police forensic unit will be on patrol, videotaping suspi- cious activity. "We have a zero tolerance policy in Port Perry this year," Insp. Desjardine said in her message to students. "Anyone arrested for offences... will be taken to head- quarters in Oshawa, and their parents will be called to pick them up if they are to be released." Others will be held overnight and face court proceedings in the morning, Insp. Desjardine warns. The Inspector said in her address that it's a small number of youths who cause problems on Halloween. "I know 98 per cent of youth are law-abiding citizens of this community," says the message. "...I am asking the 98 per cent to make sure the 2 per cent do not make history repeat itself." Legion getting set to launch poppy drive The Royal Canadian Legion's Poppy campaign, the organiza- tion's way of remembering the debt owed to those who sacri- ficed so much, isunderway. The Legion's annual distrib- tution of poppies and wreaths is the organization's only appeal for funds. The funds collected are held in a trust account. in Port Perry. The Legion believes all Cana- dians appreciate the opportuni- ty to give at this time to contrib- ute a small amount back to the debtowed. The wearing of a poppy con- stitutes an act of remembrance, a sincere thank you to those men and women who gave their lives and those injured in the line of duty.
