Staff have been packing up sur- plus inventory since last week, preparing for the final day. Current manager Jim Nolan said the decision to shut the tiny corner store down was made by Becker's management after the building was sold; a Jewelry store will be opening there soon, he said. A competitive market and Canada's long-running reces- sion were factors in the decision, said Mr. Nolan, manager of the Queen St., store since last September. "They're downsizing, like all the big corporations," he said. He said the downtown loca- tion -- there's a bigger, more modern Becker's in a plaza on Hwy. 7A -- has become a fixture for Port Perry's store and office workers, who stop in for coffee, smokes, and snacks. As well, the outlet has enjoyed the traffic generated by the post office, right next door. Many customers paused at the counter to sample the heap- ing helpings of Irish Blarney that have been doled out daily for free by Mr. Nolan since he took over the store. Becker's has been open in the Queen St. location since 1970, said Mr. Nolan.
