20- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, Oct. 25, 1994 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" SPoRrTS Cartwright Ball Bantam As playing smart holds its annual general meeting The Annual General Meeting of the CMB membership was held on Tuesday, Oct. 18. The purpose of the general meeting was for executive members to present their committee reports reviewing the past season, elect members to replace the execu- tive members whose terms had ended, and to address any other business that may arise. Consti- tutional revisions were also ad- dressed. The membership was in- formed of CMB's continued commitment to the upgrades at the Blackstock Recreation Com- plex. To date CMB has set aside more than $11,000 to be used in combination with the township and provincial grants for the improvements. These funds are currently held in trust by the Township. The funds have been raised over the past two years through donations, fundrais- ing, and through expenditure reductions by the executive. It was also noted that this had been accomplished without any player or sponsor fee increases Techstar in the past year. The member- ship reaffirmed that the execu- tive continue with the develop- ment fund provided it not affect the players or organization ad- versely in any way. Last year's general meeting saw the introduction of a consti- tution, and this year being the first full year of operation under the constitution revealed the need for revisions. These chang- es address the fact that CMB has had tremendous growth and this necessitated updating of the constitution. Mayor Howard Hall and Councillor Marilyn Pearce were on hand to oversee the elections process. A total of five seats were open to nominations this year. Those elected to a two- year term include Dave Elliott, Mike Danilko, Bill Noseworthy and David Stapley. Elected to a one-year term was Shelia Shor- tridge. Allin all the season was a suc- cessful one and the executive are already looking forward to preparing for a new season. Bantams score eight more On Oct. 16, the Techstar Ban- tams travelled to Uxbridge for their second league game. This was an extremely one-sided game. For the second game in a row, they managed to score eight goals. The final score in this one was 8-0. The offence was led by Dave Gainey and Gavin Baxter with two goals apiece, while the oth- er goals were scored by Ian Par- liament, Dave Kaminga, Dan Lyons and Ryan Puckrin. Assists went to Ryan Puck- rin, J.P. Copeland, Adam Brain and Scott Sanderson with two each, Dave Kaninga, Wyatt Park, Troy Campbell and Dave Gainey with one each. Congratulations to Rob Simm for an excellent job between the pipes to collect the shutout. On Oct. 19, the Oshawa Bruins came to town. The last time these two teams met, tem- pers flared and the Bruins went away with a 4-0 win. But this time was a totally different sto- ry. The Techstars extended their eight goal a game stretch to three with this 8-2 victory. SPANKY'S Scott Sanderson was hot this game and ended up with three goals while Gavin Baxter and Dan Lyons had two and J.P. Copeland got the other Tech- star goal. Troy Campbell, Scott Harper and Dave Kaminga had three assists each. Dave Gainey and J.P. Copeland had two each and Dan Lyons had one. Doug Short continued the great goaltending we've seen from the Techstar team. Their next home game is Wednesday, Oct. 26 against Sutton. Basketball for men A local resident is trying to start up a weekly, friendly game of pick-up mens basket- ball in Port Perry. He needs at least a dozen men and he will book a gym- nasium in town. Anyone interested is asked to call Neil Menear at 985- 4768. On Monday, Oct. 17, the Port Perry Country Style Bantam As decided that they were going to play alittle hockey. The guys changed froma slow unalert team who played one day before (in Belleville) to a fast, thinking, smart team who wanted to play. Blades was really im- pressed with the change in effort by the team. I watched this game from the sidelines and let me tell you: this honestly was the best game of hockey that I've seen in a long time. All of the guys played great. Kent Johnston played fabulous between the pipes facing 56 shots and saving all but three. Great game Lenny! Adam Hobbs scored our first goal even with Cobourg defenceman, Bryan Harold's stick wrapped around his throat. Assists on this one went to Hobbsy's linemates, Adam Smith and Derek Tindall. What a great goal this was by Hobbs! Shawn Hnatko threw a screwball at the net which fooled the goalie into 10 seconds of humiliation. Adam Hobbs picked up his second point of the night with an assist. Jon Froats also assisted on Hnatko's pretty goal. This brought the score to two biscuits a piece. The yellow and green struck next, beating Johnston to the short side. This doesn't happen too often if you know what I mean. Shane Nor- ton tied the game up with just over five minutes left to play and that's the way it stayed. Was this a lovely goal, or was this a lovely goal? Nor- ton took a pass from recently named captain Scott Heffern and put'er in the five hole with a "no-look"" backhander. Beauty Nort! A little bit of luck never hurt anyone. Jay Strickert picked up the other assist, dishing it off to Hefty. The final score remained at three all. A lot of body contact was present in this one, with crunching checks coming from all posi- tions on the ice. We only took three penalties, which really helped in the outcome of the game. Way to go, you guys for keeping your heads. Co- bourg "tough guy," Mark Hoover, was ejected for using abusive language and disputing with an official. Man, I really wish that those boys from Cobourg would learn some manners! Wyatt Park was called up from the Bantam B team to replace Colin Laird on the blue line. Colin was suffering from a chronic head cold and uncertainties of the mind. Wyatt did a great job on the line backing down from no one. The paid attendance for the game was 67. Great game guys, great effort! Our next game was in Peterborough, on Sat- urday, Oct. 22. The Nationals are a tough team and have given a lot of clubs in the league a hard time over the years. We came out strong, Scoring two goals in the first period and allowing none, thanks to some stupendous goaltending by roo- kie Shane Savage. What a show Shane put on! Jay Strickert scored our first, ripping a shot off Peterborough goalie, Craig Hendriks' abdomen and in the net. What power Jay displayed with this shot. Fellow linemates, Shane Norton and Scotty Heffern both made great passes to get the puck to Strickert and to pick up the assists. Our sec- ond goal was knocked in by Heffern, scoring through the five-hole. Once again, "50 goal man," Norty picked up an assist. Strickert also assisted. The line of Norton, Strickert and Heffern was on fire on this night, scoring all of our points. We held the lead at 2-1 going into the second, but Peterborough managed a comeback in the third to win 3-2. We'll get'em next time. I can feel it. This was another great game by all the guys. With a little more practice, I tell ya, "we'll be smokin"." This week's player profile is on second year player Adam Smith. Smitty (alias Motor City Smitty, alias Crazy Legs) is playing great as of late having phenomenal performances in Belle- ville as well as in the home opener against Co- bourg. With three points in the last two games, Smitty is an offensive weapon. Feared by goalies in Campbellford, Trenton, Oshawa, Toronto, Buffalo and Cobourg, Smitty likes to go to the net hard. Adam wants lots of fans to come out on Mon- day nights at 7:30 p.m. to watch the Country Style Bantams play because "I like it when eve- ryone goes nuts. When the fans get up on their feet and start a cheer, it makes me shiver all over. It's the greatest feeling in the world." Come on out and watch some great hockey, folks. It truly is fun and the hockey is great. The second period saw Lisa LeFort and Jen Imrie chalking up two goals both assisted by Jen Hammond. Jen Imrie com- pleted Port's scoring on a pass from Mary Justynski. Lauren Christie was net- minder for this game and suc- cessfully kept many shots from entering the net. Good team play by Diana Burnett, Leanne Davison, Kim Carrique, Cathy Cooper and Jackie Smith. Assists went to Beau Jolicoeur who played an extremely strong game controlling the play in Emiel's end. Andrew Kenny scored to close the gap on a per- fect shot again through Ryan's five-hole. Ryan Woods then stole the show stopping four break-aways that could have put Scala's staved off Emiel's attack long enough for Eric Troan to get his fourth goal of the game. Wade Ritchie ended the games, scoring by getting an unassisted goal. Hustler awards for the game go to Devon Symes for Scala's
