The execu- tive and players wish a speedy recovery to all those injured in the disaster that upset every- one in our community. Now to this week's action that saw those Harrison Blazers remain in top spot as the first round of league action is a week away from completion. Phantoms vs Hawks Game one saw the Pineridge Phantoms and the J&D Hawks battle to a 2-2 draw as the sun rose on the first game of week eight. The Phantoms took a first pe- riod lead on a pair of goals by Bill Van Camp with assists to Sean Fewer and Clarence Ste- phenson. However, as seen in the last few weeks, those J&D Hawks never say die, and they battled back in this one on goals by Dave "Pie" Jackson from Ritch- ie Lefort and "Regional" Reg McIntyre, and later Peter Lane from "Captain" Callery to se- cure the tie and split the points to one apiece. Both goaltenders, Sean Park- er for the Phantoms and Ray Gibson for the Hawks stood their ground to make this one of the best 6:45 a.m. games this year. Devils vs Aces Game two ended in exactly the same result as the Pizza De- light Devils and the Taylor Aces also played to a 2-2 draw. With the Aces still waiting for a full bench to arrive, the action went end-to-end through a scoreless first period, due to fine goal- tending by John Moore in the Ace cage, and Jon Rensink fill- ing in for Doug MacSween in the Devil cage. The lone marker of period two belonged to the Devils as Ken Smart Sr. potted one from "Bub- ba" McEachern and Tim Ash- Malmont Atoms host Markham On Oct. 21 our Atom A Rep team hosted Markham Thunder. The game was closely con- tested with the visitors stealing a 4-3 victory. Our shooters couldn't get enough shots up high on the net to take advantage of our good fore- checking and territorial advantage. In the opening period Tyler Weisflock was rejected on a backhand shot after swooping in on right wing. Goalie D'arcy Stephens stopped a partial breakaway several minutes before Markham opened a 1-0 lead. Adam Moynes made a nice pass to Dean VanCamp in front and Scott Duncan had a hard shot from the blue line for our other period highlights. Dean VanCamp bulled his way around the defence and scored our tying goal on a deke to the backhand to get the Green Machine fueled up for the second period. Assists were by Steve MacLennan and Trevor Lance. Shortly after, Trevor Lance hit the post on a good chance and D'Arcy smothered the puck well to foil a 2-on-1 Markham opportunity. At 4:35 Tim Jones pumped a goal from the top of the face-off circle after a rebound came out from a play by Trevor Lance and Mark Duncan. This gave Port a 3-1 lead as Dean VanCamp had made it 2-1 earlier on a quick wrist shot under the crossbar with assists by Mark Dun- can and Trevor Weisflock. Other second period plays of note included D'Arcy's amazing stick save (from on his belly) to stop a Thunder player who was left all alone in front. Tyler Houthuys and Jamie Smith on defence did some good work at the offensive blue line to stop clearouts. Near the end of the second Adam Moynes used his size!! to shield the puck in getting by a defender and earninga good short handed scoring chance. In the third period Markham notched a pow- er play goal and then tied the score by taking advantage of hiding a man all alone in front of the get. Encouraged by their success they thundered on to score the winner. Goalie Mike Koury stopped further damage with a nice blocker save. Near the end of the game, Jeff Tarbotton came close to notching the tying goal as he, Dane Gray, Mike LeFort and Justin Mof- fatt were all buzzing around the offensive zone and battling for the puck. Our comeback was interrupted by the cur- few buzzer unfortunately, but it was a good game for the Malmont squad nonetheless. The defencemen were using their practice pointers to tie up forwards around the slot better and the forwards were doing a better job in the of- fensive zone by feeding the puck back to open pointmen and making fewer "blind dump turno- vers" out of the corners. "Best effort" for the Mal- mont team goes to defenceman Tim Jones for this game. On Sunday, Oct. 23 our Malmont squad trav- elled to Oshawa to take on the Oshawa Red Wings. Our boys played a very well executed game with solid defensive play and great hustle by our forward lines and good goaltending. As a result, we rolled over the Red Wings by a 8-0 score. Dean Van Camp had a great game, scoring five of our eight goals, and was given the nod for "best effort." Port's first goal was scored by Dean just min- utes into the first period. Dean picked up a loose puck in front of his own net and skated all the way up ice sweepingin front of the Oshawa goal- ie and scoring on a backhand. Two minutes lat- er, Dean again put Port up 2-0 on a hard wrist shot beating the goalie on the glove side. Assists went to Mike LeFort and Mark Duncan. Port went up 3-0 on a replay of our second goal when Dean again beat the goalie with a wrist shot. Assists on this goal were by Mike LeFort and Steve MacLennan. Our fourth goal was another instant replay of the second and third when right from the faceoff Trevor Weisflock skated in and blasted a hard wrist shot over the goalie's shoulder. Malmont forwards continued to contain Oshawa in their own end with good forecheck- ing and our blueliners worked hard at keeping the puck out of our end. However, Oshawa did manage to regroup somewhat in the second and goalie Mike Koury came up with some good saves. Dean VanCamp again scored his fourth of the game, when he received a pass from Mark Duncan and broke in all along on the goalie to put Port up 5-0. Just minutes later Dane Gray received a pass from Jeff Tarbotton and Scott Duncan and man- aged to shovel the puck into the net despite be- ing tripped by the defenceman. Port would go up 7-0 before the second period ended on Dean's fifth goal of the game. Mike LeFort and Steve MacLennan got assists. The third period saw a little more offense from Oshawa however our Malmont boys were able to keep them off the board to preserve the shutout. Jamie Smith closed out the scoring on an unas- sisted goal to give Port Perry the 8-0 win.
