22- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, Oct. 25, 1994 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" SProrTS DAVID STELUPORT PERRY STAR Rookies of the MoJacks were initiated last week. Pictured are some of the rookies sport- ing their new hair cuts prior to the game. Saturday morning saw the Big V squad trav- el to Ops Arena for their first tournament of the season. The opening game not only intro- duced the boys to the eventual tourny winners but also to full contact action. The larger En- nismore squad was relentless in their attack as they peppered the beleaguered netminder Kenny Lukas mercilessly during the first two periods. Tim Wray's goal set up by Eric Bird as well as Steven Schewaga's unassisted marker was the only offense the team could muster during the course of the game. The team showed char- acter by regrouping and limiting Ennismore to only one goal in the third as well as by dishing out more than they received! Game two against Manvers was just over two minutes long and found Big V down 2-0, however from that point on the game belonged to our squad. Anchored by the stellar goaltend- | ing of Eric Bird, the defence and offense took control. Kenny Lukas cut the Manvers lead in half when he fired a shot through the goalies legs after a nice relay from Billy Carr and Mike Giannini. Matt McGarry's blast from Todd Mitchell knotted the game halfway through the third. Big V in tournament action marker at 4:32 with Clayton Dales sewing it up on a setup from Giannini and Wray. During game three against the host squad Ops, the team put to use lessons learned from games one and two. A chippy Ops squad jumped to an early lead but Billy Carr's second effort al- lowed Chris Medford to fire a shot in the corner to tie the game at 1-1. Ops went ahead part way through the second period but from that point on Eric Bird's stand- out netminding continued to frustrate the Ops marksmen. An extremely physical third period culminat- ed with Billy Carr's dramatic tying goal assisted by Tim Wray. That goal, to tie the game, was to mean that Big V finished in second place overall and skated away with the silver medals. The standout goaltending of Eric Bird along with the defensive corps of Mike Wadsworth, Peter Landry, Todd Mitchell, Jason Howarth, Steven Schewaga and Jason Redman ar to be congratulated on an excellent performance. The offense comprised of Billy Carr, Rodney Bond, Clayton Dales, Matt Vaughan, Matt McGarry, Mike Giannini, Matt Cracknell, Tim Wray, Ken Lukas and Chris Medford all played a great tourny. Special thanks to our extra loud Peter Landry set up Tim Wray's insurance cheering squad! Brooklin Bruins are undefeated Raven's Renovations were again blanked on Sunday in the local Broomball League. This time they went down at the hands of Trader Sam's by a 4-0 score. The first period ended with a lone marker going to Charlie Dennis from Ken St. Amant scored late in the half. It stayed this close until just about the midway point of the second when St. Amant drew another assist, this time on Brad Maarse's marker. Dennis and St. Amant both hooked up again to put the game out of reach of the Raven's squad be- fore Jim Gregg finished it off with 25 seconds left on the clock. Tim Dennis earned the shutout for Sam's. The B&R Swampers and the Blackstock Brewers hooked up in a close affair with the Brew- ers emerging victorious with a 3-1 decision. The first half went scoreless and Blackstock drew first blood early in the second period with Tom Wotten setting up Ron Short. They pulled ahead by two with Steve Halkes goingin on an unassisted effort. With just under two minutes left to play, the Swampers pulled to within one on the pow- er play when Jarrett Harman put one in from Mike Geer, banking the shot off a Black- stock defender. With 20 seconds to play and the Swamper's goal- le racing for the bench, Dave Dalton found himself in alone on the empty net for the final goal. The Framers Gallery and Brooklin Bruins squared off in the final affair of the day with Brooklin keeping their unde- feated string intact with a 4-1 win. The Framer's scored first on an unassisted goal from Brian Kerry. The Bruins tied it one minute later with Ron Att- wood scoring from Dan Jansma. Brooklin promptly charged down ice on the ensuing faceoft to regain their single goal lead as Rick Mitchell set up Shawn Mitchell. The first period ended with the 2-1 score which the Bruins added to on two late goals from Nick Attwood with Jansma and Ron Attwood draw- ing the assists. ModJacks lose to the Eagles From Page 19 arena for the game. They were a vocal crowd that really gave the Eagles a boost. Could they ir- timidate Leslie? "The crowd def- "ag KEITH LESLIE initely helps them," Leslie said, "but it didn't affect me at all." The Port Perry rookies were sporting new hairstyles at the game. More to the point, they were sporting much less hair that they had in Port Perry last Sunday. The veteran MoJacks appointed themselves team barbers in initiating their new teammates. The rookies look like they went to a blind hair- stylist. A major haircutting left them with only small tufts and lines of hair where there once had been full heads of hair. One victim, Jamie More, told the Star the rookies had no say in how the cut would look. "They just went nuts," More said. "At school Friday, every- one was laughing (at the hair- cut), but it was kinda fun." The start of the game was pushed back due to poor ice con- ditions. A public skate before the game had worn the ice down to the cement in some spots. Mo- Jacks general manager, Mur- ray Parliament, had an optimis- tic view on the delay. "They haven't scored on us yet," he said. : The Modacks will return to Port Perry on Sunday night when they host the return match-up with the Bowmanville Eagles. AH A a - Legionnaires meet Cobourg On Friday, Oct. 21, the Le- gionaires travelled to Cobourg for their first match-up of the. season. The first period saw lots of end-to-end action but ended goal-free and penalty-free. At 12:28 of the second period, . Cobourg found the mark. At 10:59, Brad Johnston tied it up on a slapshot from the point, as- sisted by Greg Bruton. Nick Pe- lyk was serving up lots of trou- ble around the net but Cobourg held their ground. Port found . themselves short-handed at the 9:20 mark of the second but did a good job of penalty killing. By MACKEY, BAILEY & KORB BARRISTERS & SOLICITORS the end of the second, play had slowed somewhat and Port be- gan to take control of the action. Legionaires had lots of good chances but failed to put one home. Both Chris Monsma and Mike MacLennan stood on their heads to keep the puck out of their net. Chris made an out- standing foot save and Mike lit- erally used his head! With 1:14 left in the second, Cobourg scored and added another with 43 seconds left on the clock. Heading into the third, with the score 3-1 Cobourg, Port lost control of the puck in their own Saturday Mornings 9:00am to 12:00 noon Oshawa Rd., Port Perry Lake Scugog Lumber Building 985-7391 end and Cobourg chalked up an- other goal. Port had much more control of the game and found the net with 43 seconds left in the game. Greg Bruton scored, unassisted. : Final score of the game was Cobourg 4 Port Perry 2. Penalty minutes were even at six. Lions Atoms Port Perry Lions came from behind to edge Laurentian Bank 6-4 in Atom action. Goal scorers for the Lions were Mike Blakey with four and singles went to John Kyle and B.J. Schaump. . Goal scorers for Laurentian Bank were two by'Stuart Co- chrane and singles by Stormy Wootton and Greg Hunter. Legionnaires lose 3-2 The Legionaires had another busy hockey weekend playing their second game of the weekend in Whitby Saturday night against the Whitby Iroquois. Port Perry was on the board early with a nice goal by Nick Pelyk. Port Perry was checking hard and keeping control on the puck, but Whitby's goalie stopped Port from putting any more points on the board in the first period. Chris Monsma was making some outstanding saves in net but Whitby kept the pressure on him and scored their first goal at 9:27 of the second period. Port suffered a few penalties in the second period and Whitby kept digging, getting their second and third goals in the space of three minutes. Mike MacLennan came into net in the second halfofthe sec- ond period. At 8:42 of the third period, Greg Bruton let go one heck of a slapshot that sailed past the Whitby goalie so fast that he nev- er moved a muscle. Nick Pelyk took a heavy shot but the Whit- by goalie stopped him cold. Mike MacLennan made some nice saves and kept Whitby off the scoreboard. Despite some real solid hustling from Chad Lance and Braden Tarbotton that Whitby goalie would not give us a break. Final score Whitby 3 Port Perry 2. Great effort from all our players. Our next home game is Oct. 28 at 9:15 p.m. against Stouf¥- ville. See you there. Get well soon, Ryan McQuade. f a Sap TTL.
