Many customers at the local IGA store purchased reusable bags. The two individ- uals selected for shopping with their own bags at each of the grocery stores were pleased with their composter prizes. And at least one coffee shop owner feels more customers than usual brought in mugs of their own. Two businesses - and possibly more - will continue the offer. The Feed Bin was already doing so on its own initiative, and the Country Style in Manchester will continue to offer a 10 per cent discount. Volunteers from the Central Seven Association were good enough to do a cleanup of Ro- tary Park in addition to the clean-up job they regularly do at the arena. A wide selection of material with tips on reducing waste was and will continue to be available in the handout unit at Scugog Library. Results of the survey which was done indicate that a lot of shoppers have concerns about overpackaging, particularly with regard to cereals, cookies, meats, laundry detergent, con- venience foods (e.g. "luncha- bles"), plastic containers and the use of styrofoam trays. Say- ing "no" to some of these pur- chases is a clearly defined op- tion for at least some survey respondents. Many would like oll XX TELE aki Watts B.Sc. Scugog's Green Team is thinking about moving on to other environmental issues. In addition to concerns about waste, group members have identified pesticides, water quality, local development, air pollution and the chlorine issue as possible future areas of inter- est. Others concerned about one or more of these issues are wel- ¢ome to come to the group's next meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 1 at 8:30 p.m. You don't have to be some kind of "expert" to join, you just have to care!
