PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, Oct. 25, 1994 - 5 $11,000 raised so far Council to open new account for CMB By Kelly Lown Port Perry Star Township Council has opened a trust fund on behalf of Cart- wright Minor Ball. Cartwright Minor Ball made a commitment to the proposed redevelopment of the Black- stock Fairgrounds and has been setting aside money for the pro- Ject for the past two years. The organization has put $11,146 towards future devel- opment of the recreation centre, which is not only to include new ball diamonds, and improve- ments to existing ones, but the addition to the recreation cen- tre and playground equipment. "Over the past year Cart- wright Minor Ball has raised a substantial amount of money and they approached council about setting up a trust fund," Ward 2 Councillor Marilyn Pearce said. The township is seeking grants to help with the redev- lopment for the area, but if it does not pan out, the organiza- tion has money which is build- ing up, shesaid. "One way or another, we defi- nitely have to build some dia- monds in Cartwright next year,"she said. The redevelopment of Black- stock Fairgrounds took a step forward last week when Scugog councillors voted to go ahead 'with the controversial sale of parklandin Blackstock. The unanimous vote set in motion the plan to sell the land and set the funds aside for im- provements to the community centre, ball diamonds and fair- grounds. Cartwright Minor Ball was represented at the meeting, ar- guingin favorofthe sale. Ron Martyn, a member of the executive of the organization, said with the increased popular- ity of baseball, softball and slo- pitch the shortage of diamonds was becoming more relevant. Many coaches began putting their team through practice ses- sions and drills in open fields and lots, he said. The organization said it is causing unsafe and potentially dangeroussituations.
