"For me that nomination is saying, we can make a difference as individu- als." "It was really the first time I'd had the opportunity to gain insight into people whose back- ground was different from mine," she said. She began to think about the barriers that are raised in front of people who differ from the norm; those feelings were rein- forced when her son John, just 18, was diagnosed with cancer and had to deal with misunder- standing and a noticeable lack of compassion until his death, 14 months later, at 19. John's passing left Mrs. McArthur with a clear focus: "If I could do anything to remove barriers in society," she said, "I'd do it." Her work at Durham College evolved into a training program, aimed at meeting the challenges of diversity, which is now con- ducted both at the college and in the work place. The 18-hour program is not a lecture-based seminar, but rather encourages participants to discuss issues, and confront for themselves the perceptions they hold. She also created Current Perspectives, a talk show on community cable television in Oshawa, which focuses on 1ssues surrounding diversity and acceptance.
