Mr. Shepherd made the request of minister Alan Rock in the House of Commons last Tuesday (Oct. 25). The minister replied that legislation on crime and illegal use of firearms 1s forthcoming. Mr. Shepherd said in an interview later that he feels sentences should be doled out to people found in possession of illegal firearms, whether they're used in the commission of a crime or not. "Why do we have to have an indictable offence before we can arrest someone for carrying an illegal gun?" he said. Such sentencing would prove a deterrent to those who might carry unregistered or prohibited weapons while at the same time protecting the rights of legitimate gun owners, he said. Mr. Shepherd is not a gun owner, but has received an earful from the gun lobby since the feds proposed changes to regis- tration laws. "I think what we didn't anticipate was the spin on the gun issue which has been an affront to legal gun owners," he said. "Once you start going out and talking to gun owners, you realize they have their rights." "The real issue is crime," he added. "What people want us to focus on is the aspect of crime."
