---- 20- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, November 1; 1994 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" vr SPORTS Midget A squad does exist, just not too much to report Yes, Virginia, there really is a Santa Claus and there really is a Midget 1 team in town this season. The only trouble is - there hasn't been much to re- port - yet. Unfortunately, the lads have been anxiously await- ing that ever-elusive first win but once recovered from their "absenteeism", this is bound to happen. Under the new direction of Warren Geer, Garry Geer, and Ryan Parliament, the Panthers have the potential to do very well. Along with the excellent credentials of the coaching staff, the talents on the club consist of: forwards Daryl Bour- geois, Tom Chambers, Jeremy Geer, Kevin Hobbs, Matt Hobbs, Erik Hudson, Graig Laird, Kenton LeFort and Ian Shrigley. Backing them on de- fence are Gord Bentley, Jeff Clarke, Chris Drury, Jeff Ja- mieson and Ian McCready. Last but never least, the goaltending duo of John Babcock and Scott Prechitko. This year, the Panthers are sporting their Panther emblem on jerseys provided by their new sponsor "Lakeside Golf and Hockey". Despite being off to a .slow start in the win column, it is still early days yet and these guys are just getting geared up. With a full contingent of talent on this squad, it will be only a matter of time before we start reading the results. Recently a group of Major Bantams were called up to fill in some gaps for a home game on Oct. 24. Colin Laird, Mike Morden, Shane Norton, Nick Skerratt and Jay Strickert did a fine job despite the outcome of this one, 7-1 in favor of Lindsay. The lone goal for the Panthers was finally scored in the dying minutes of this very long game and came from our visiting Ban- tam, Shane Norton, assisted by Kevin Hobbs. It was a much better showing when the Panthers travelled to Port Hope on Oct. 26 to match wits against a feisty bunch of Redmen. This night we were only two short of our own and Port Perry opened up the scor- ing in the first period on a pow- er-play goal by Graig Laird. This one was set up by some smooth passing moves from our own end and assists went to Jer- emy Geer and Jeff Clarke. Nice work, fellas. Port Hope retaliated with not one but two goals to take the lead 2-1. Not to be outdone, our slight but mighty Jeff Clarke scored a crackerjack goal to tie things up. Once again, the goal came on the power play and Jeff came sneaking in from the blue Panthers record first win of year The Port Perry Panthers Midget 1 team took to the ice tor the third time in one week for a matchup against the L.N.H.L. Oshawa Bruins. Game time was 8 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 29 and it proved to be an exciting one for the crowd. Putting in a rare guest appearance was our very own #55. Nice to see you back in the lineup Ian. Also in this game once again filling in on defence was Nick Skerratt from the Bantam A squad. There was lots of good hustle from both sides in the first period and the action was end to end. Both goalies were coming up with some good saves but in the last second of play, Ian Shrigley drilled it past the goalie on a nice setup in front from Kenton LeFort and Craig Laird. The line of Tom Chambers, Matt Hobbs and Kevin Hobbs . went to work in the second producing two goals. While Kevin kept the Bruin defencemen tied up on front, Matt's strong fore- checking behind the net allowed him to feed the puck to Tom enabling him to slip it by a startled goalie. Minutes later while shorthanded some good hustle from the guys allowed Kevin Hobbs to blast one in the net from inside the blue line increas- ing the Pantherslead 3-0. Late in the period playing two men short Scott Prechitko comes up with some superb saves to keep the Bruins at bay. In the third while playing two men short again, the Bruins pressure finally pays off rewarding them their first and only goal. As the game progressed, Jay King snuffed out any Bruins' comeback hopes by scoring the Panthers fourth goal assisted by Ian Shrigley and Kevin Hobbs, Daryl Bourgeois completed the 5-1 win in the dying seconds of the game with a nice rush and a backhanded goal in the top corner assisted by Nick Skerratt. Well done everyone. Next home game against Belleville is Nov. 7 at 9:15 p.m. Comeout and cheer themon. PORT PERRY SNOWMOBILE CLUB PRESENTS The 2nd Annual [eo 3-1 2 [VVC T, T- I-7. The game continued to be an aggressive one and we eventu- ally lost another two players. As the minutes ticked away in the third period, Port Hope took ad- vantage of a misfortunate situa- tion and quickly scored two fur- ther goals, leaving the final score 4-2 in favor of the Red- men. Jay King donned his blades to join us for this one and we hope to see him back again as a per- manent fixture. IGA Juniors win another Port Perry IGA Juniors travelled to Ajax Saturday evening, nervous with the fact they had to face a team who host five players of the Regional Elite team. Port decided to meet that challenge, with a quick first goal from Shona Moase, set up by Janna Senyk minutes into the game. It took the girls some time to warmup. oo ~ Picking up the pace a little Lisa Bonser hit the net again with help from Cara Vander Slagt. Ajax then netted their first to make it 2-1. Port found themselves shorthanded while a penal- ke it a tie game. Shona thought otherwise netting a shorthanded goal with Janna's help again. Makingit 3-1 at the end of the first. } Port stood their ground early in the second period. Janna this This was Ajax's chance to ma _ time setting-up Jennifer Elliot. Port never does things the easy way. With two in the penalty box, the girls were just trying to hold on to the ring to kill some time. Cara and Shona both took turns ragging the ring for a while and with five seconds left in one of the penalties, Shona wound up and snapped a wrist shot that hit the top corner. The girls let loose and the more penalties the refs gave the more Port scored. Four shorthanded goals in all. Added to the scoring were Lisa and Shona again, and Laura Hooker's last goal whizzed by the Ajax goalie's ear. Assists went to Laura, Janna, Cara and Brooke Shanley. One goal was missed in all the excitement, Jennifer sneaked one in with a rebound off of Dana Hooker's skate. Ajax not to be out done, got tired of fooling around and hit Port's net with 21 seconds left in the game. Making the final score Port Perry IGA's 9 - Ajax 2. Nice work girls. Auctioneers come back and win grudge match rick Lewis and Justin Koury. On Friday, Oct. 28 Trenton Kurtis Wagar and Scott Hon- visited the Scugog Arena to play the Pearce Auctioneers. Earlier in the season Trenton had beat- en the Port Perry squad 8-4, but not tonight. Coach Spencley had the boys all geared up and ready to go. Trenton scored near the end of the first period to take a one goal lead but early in the second Teddy Howarth scored to even the match. Assisted from Kevin Robins. Two minutes later Trenton again took the lead but before the second period ended _ Lucas Fraser scored from Jor- dan Froats and Justin Koury. In the third period Teddy Howarth scored his second goal of the game assisted by Justin Shinn. Kevin Robins scored into an empty net after Trenton pulled their goalie for an extra attacker. Assists going to Pat- ey were solid between the pipes as were the defensive corp of Justin Koury, Justin Shinn, gordon Smith and Ryan Hnat- o. The wingers of Lucas Fraser, Jordan Froats, Tyler Weisflock, Alexander Nicolaou, Kevin Rob- ins and Teddy Howarth pa- trolled the wings and did not al- low the Trenton team to break out as they did in the first meet- ing. The centres of Joey Lane, Pat- rick Lewis and Chet Martin helped the defense in their own end as well as leading many rushes. : The next home game is Fri- day evening with Port Hope as the opposition. Saturday the team goes to Little Britain for the Mariposa Tournament. First gameis 7a.m. Big V, Scala meet Saturday morning saw an ex- citing match-up between Scala Bros. and Big V. Tim Wray broke a first period deadlock with an unassisted marker to give Big V a one-goal lead. Billy Carr increased the mar- gin by one when he finished off a nice play from Matt McGarry and Clayton Dales. Todd Mitch- ell gave Big V a 3-0 lead when he bulged the twine on a great individual effort. Mike Wads- worth's drive from the point was tapped in by Tim Wray for his second goal of the game. Matt McGarry's nifty setup to Billy Carr proved too hot to han- dle for Scala's netminder Devon Symes. Symes played a great game in net, turning back the BigV attackers onslaught again and again but Tim Wray found the mark with his third of the game from Rodney Bond. Aaron Lycett got Scala on the board early in the third on a nice unassisted effort. Ian Gar- nett further chipped at the Big V lead when he buried a re- bound over the sprawled goal- tender. From that point on, Big V goalkeep Ken Lukas shut down the Scala marksmen in a great performance between the pipes. Matt Cracknell lifted an un- assisted shot past Symes, fol- lowed by Matt Vaughan's setup of Todd Mitchell's second mark- er of the day. Billy Carr's third from Steven Schewaga complet- ed the scoring. Good game by both squads.
