Yes In my opinion with the escalating costs of teachers salaries, janitorial costs, etc. plus the population growth and provincial cutback | cannot foresee how, in the next 3 years, this board or any other board in Ontario can operate effectively within its current budget. The board's budget last year was $368 million. 1. The "Tax and Spend" yes con- ditional to: mentality must stop. 2. Efforts should be made to reduce the bloated bureaucracy. 3. We here in Scugog, to best of my knowledge, have not had to deal with this problem - that is not to say that it could not become a problem in the future. All students have a right to feel safe and protected within their schools. A zero tolerance policy should be putin place. Yes. Some boys carry pocket knives to school (at the high school level) - they feel for protection. The board in collaboration with the Durham Regional Police has 2-way radios operative in 51 of their schools. No child should feel threatened in his school environment. | students in a positive way. If grant money is to be allocated it would be better spent on _| a facility such as a swimming complex. Smaller classes. Yes - | would think in the not too distant future school terms are going to have to be extended so that better use is being made of the current facilities. We cannot afford the luxury of buildings being closed two months of the year. Scugog Township has approximately 3,600 students - over 1/4 of our students are in portables (Scugog has 38 portables). More effective planning; anticipating growth. (S.A. Cawker, our newest 'school already has 11 portables). Expand existing schools. Yes and comparable to other boards. The board has saved $5 million over the last few years by sticking to policy and making routes more efficient. | would like to see computerizing routes for efficiency and sharing with the Separate Board complete by Sept. '96. Yes Yes - Busing is adequate, but | believe we could make it more cost effective by continuing to reach agreements with other boards so that routes aren't duplicated. Last year the board spent $15 million on busing. A more cost effective measure would be to have a contractual agreement with the Catholic School Board to combine routes plus share cost, to deal with overcrowding and others half empty; duplication of routes should be eliminated. | believe in: « focusing on high student achievement, » representing interests of the larger community, * keeping costs reasonable while providing quality education, + making parents and the community true partners in education, + opportunities for learning and the essentials be provided. My bursery experience and post teaching experience at Durham College. | believe | would bring to this board a dedication to Scugog students and ' their parents. | am approachable and would work diligently to ensure you the taxpayer that "bigger is not always better" and our township will not be overlooked. Candidates for Separate School Board KATHY LeFORT I AY JOHN SACCO The social contract, constant cuts in grants, upcoming provincial election, and a student enrollment growing by 10 per cent per year dictates the board to prioritize the needs of the system and continue to re-evaluate the budget. Yes, if everything remains constant. However, the fact is the development of more homes, increase in school enroll- ments, plus increase in cost of supplies and school construction, we need cost of index increments in order not to jeop- ardize our education system. Is transportation (busing) within the system adequate? Adequate but will improve when the computer system between the separate board and the public board comes on line and blends the routes where feasible allowing routes and budgets to become more efficient. Yes. Sharing with Public Board is a plus. We need to continue to improve the safety, time spent on buses and efficiency of making buses most eco- nomical. We need to consult to get feedback from parents and drivers.
