"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" Many projects planned as Abuse Awareness Month begins in region Woman abuse doesn't happen to people we know and love - or does it? A recent survey by Statistics Canada on Violence against women says that three in 10 women currently or previously married in Canada have experi- enced at least one incident of physical or sexual violence at the hands of a marital partner and children witnessed violence against their mothers in almost er cent of these families. Professionals in Durham Region have become increasingly aware of the inci- dence and severity of the issue and for several years have been working along with abused women to develop a Woman Abuse Protocol for Durham Re- gion. November is Women Abuse Awareness Month so many events have been scheduled by various community groups across the region to increase public knowledge. One of the most innovative is the Clothes- line Project. - Women from across Durham Region who have been physical- ly, emotionally, or sexually abused have been offered the opportunity to create a tee shirt expressing in pictures or words the pain, strong emotions, and the healing of their experiences. The shirts are hung together as a powerful statement of what women in our region have expe- rienced. The first opportunity to see the Clothesline Project will be at the official opening ceremo- nies on Nov. 2 at 11 a.m. at the Michael Starr Building in downtown Oshawa. From there the display will travel through- out the region to a variety of lo- cations during the month of No- vember. A powerful theatrical perfor- mance called "Shelter from As- sault" will be presented on Nov. 3 at Bowmanville High School (7:30 p.m.).
