Quartet to pay visit to Burns Church Nov. 13 The mixed quartet "Decision" is in concert in Burns Church, Ashburn, on Sunday evening, Nov. 13 at 7:30 p.m. They sing a variety of songs from southern gospel to tradi- tional to contemporary. Their leader, Wayne Ropp, is current- ly president of Canadian Gospel Music Association. One of the young women, Paula Litwiller, was winner of an award in solo in Nashville recently. Their hometown is Tavistock, Ontario. Their rich harmony 18 enjoyed by audiences, In churches and auditoriums throughout southern Ontario. For information re Burns Church concert, phone (905) 655-4240. Candidat From Page 1 Several candidates felt the way to continue to provide ser- vices without tax increases was to encourage more develop- ment. Ward 4 hopeful Joyce Kelly said council needs to look at de- velopment and assess the mon- ey coming in to gain a balance to maintain the services. Acclaimed Ward 3 councillor Ken Gadsden told the audience all targets mustbe looked atina linked fashion. "We must con- tinue to enhance the communi- ty to attract industry and to work together." The Ward 3 councillor said he is not willing togive anything upin the way of services. Ward 2 hopeful Jim Grosven- or believes services can be main- tained and Ward 2 incumbent Marilyn Pearce said services so far haven't been cut back and with investment and growth they willnothavetobe. Ward 1 candidates had differ- ing opinions. Incumbent Ken Carruthers said he believes the last council did an outstanding job the last three years holding the line on taxes and believes they can maintain that. Barry Johnston believes the council can maintain its budget and Doug Moffatt said he would give up "rural garbage pick-up" * ifit meant cutting services. Gar- bage pick up is a service he says his constituents do not want. The new multi-purpose facili- ty, in Port Perry, was another hot topic for the candidates. While incumbent Councillors Pearce, Carruthers and Gads- den steadfastly defended 'the construction of the banquet fa- cility, other candidates slammed the idea, calling it a meeting waste of taxpayers' dollars. Councillor Carruthers said he "strongly supports the multi- purpose facility." Councillor Pearce, also in support of the new hall said rec- reation is an important part of life. She said the new hall will also be a help to the growing population of seniors allowing them more use of theLatcham Centre. Councillor Gadsden, also in support said he feels recreation is a part of life and "if we don't have it, we won't attract the business that we need." All three incumbents stressed that the hall is the first phase of a full recreation facility planned for the arena. Mr. Donaldson was also in support of the hall calling him- self a "firm-believer"" in the mul- ti-purpose facility which is only the firstin a phase. Barry Johnston, in support of the idea, said "if they built it, yes, they will come to the com- plex," but believes a better solu- tion is to appeal to the public to help supportit. Mrs. Puckrin spoke out against the facility saying "ra- tionalization"" must be used. "To go into debt because of itisnot a good idea," she said. Extras and changes to the fa- cility since its inception has Ward 4 candidate Mr. Ford be- lieving the facilty will not pay for itself. Mr. Moffatt said that building it is the easy part, but keeping it going is the hard part.
