18- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, Noveinber 8, 1994 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" | SPORTS Overhead Door Peewees defeat Oshawa team 2-0 ' On Friday, Nov. 4 the Peewee Bs headed down the road to ; Stouffville to take on the Stouffville clippers. This was our first encounter with the Stouffville team and the game proved to be close on the scoresheet but lopsided in the penalty department. Despite only losing to Stouffville 3-2, Port had to deal with a large discrepancy in penalty calls as they were assessed 24 pen- { alty minutes as compared to four minutes for the home team. | Ryan Fraser had a standout game in net and was given the "best effort" award for his work in facing twice as many shots as our opponent's goalie. Stouffville were the first to get on the scoreboard early in the first period and the score remained 1-0 to the end of the first as Port had to kill off a five minute major. Troy Hazelton and John Bacon worked hard to try and get us on the board. EL d SR 2 as ih sey poneits Sn RS A ARSE oo Aer AAA A a ae ro Se 7 > oo digi The S.A. In the second, Port was again assessed a five minute major, but despite being shorthanded scored our first goal. Scott Brownson swept in and flipped the puck over the goalie after re- ceiving a pass from Scott Cunningham. Heading into the third, Stouffville took the lead again on a power play, but just minutes later our Bs tied the score two all. Scott Cunningham tipped in a rebound on a hard shot from Murphy Irvine. Unfortunately though, Stouffville scored again seconds later to take thelead 3-2 which they held to the end. Kudos go to Chris Jones, David Justynski, John Burnett and Joel Phoenix for some good penalty killingin the game, particu- larly when we were short by two men latein the game. On Saturday night, Nov. 5 the "Overhead Doors" Peewees hosted the Oshawa Blackhawks and registered a shutout win of 2-0. This game was a low-key game compared to the previous night with few penalties and fewer goals. Port Perry kept Oshawa in their own end for most of the first period but were unable to score despite good chances by Matt MacMaster and Scott Brownson. The second period also saw some good chances and improved passing. Russ Brown and Kam Cooper broke in on a breakaway early in the second but were stonewalled by the Oshawa goalie. Port kept the pressure on and Reid McTaggart and Murphy Ir- vine kept the puck in at the blueline. Port Perry finally broke the ice and scored the first goal. Scott Cunningham tipped in a rebound from a shot by Joel Phoenix to give Port the 1-0 lead. Grant Hooker was credited with an as- sist. The team continued to work hard to preserve the win and the shutout. Joel Van Camp and Russ Brown battled for the puck in the corners and our defence played tough. Towards the end of the third Matt MacMaster and Scott Cunningham assisted on a goal by Kam Cooper to give Port Perry a 2-0 lead which held to the final buzzer. Chris Thompson registered the shutout and was the coaches choice for "best effort."
