a " "A Family Tradition for 128 Years" ao oe PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, November 8, 1994 - 19 SPORTS On Nov. 4 the Malmont Atom As hosted the Oshawa Little NHL Bruins. They improved their play execution as the game progressed and then cruised to a 5-0 shutout victory. Goal- ie Mike Koury registered the big goose egg and flawlessly handled the few tough shots Oshawa managed. In the first period he stopped a low glove side shot to keep the game scoreless. Later in the first period Justin Moffatt got by a defenceman in the neutral zone and made a two on one pass to Jeff Tarbotton who got us on the scoresheet. Steve MacLennan also tallied an assist on the play. Later on Dane Gray couldn't get one by the Oshawa goalie to con- vert a three on one Port rush. Then Dean Van- Camp created a turnover in the offensive zone and the subsequent flurry around the Oshawa net was again stymied as our shooters couldn't get the puck high into the net where the Bruin goalie was vulnerable. Near the end of the period, Oshawa went on a powerplay. Steve MacLennan made two nice plays at the Oshawa blue line to interrupt their breakouts. Mark Duncan had a near miss from his wing position after a setup by Mike LeFort. Early in the second period, Trevor Weisflock did some nifty stick handling around the Bruins net. Port began to pour on even more pressure as Dean missed on a short breakaway and Mark shot the rebound into the goalies ads. P Our efforts were finally rewarded as Mike LeFort scored from Jeff Tarbotton and Tyler Houthuys. Trevor then made a good pass to Dean VanCamp who was left totally uncovered in the slot. Mark, Trevor W. and Dean were foiled in a three on one rush near the end of the period. In the third period our relentless forecheck- ing and backchecking paid off when Mark lift- ed a rebound high into the gaping net. Jeffand Trevor W. had another good opportunity on a twoon one. Oshawa showed alittle bit of recovery at this point and did some effective forechecking of their own but defenceman Tim Jones made two good consecutive clearing plays to relieve the pressure. Tyler Houthuys and Jamie Smith also backed up Mike Koury's shutout effort from their rearguard positions. With the score now 3-0 Dane Gray calmly Malmont Atoms win again chipped in the fourth Malmont marker on a loose goalmouth puck shortly after we had missed on a two on zero breakaway. Assists were by Mike LeFort and Adam Moynes. Dean VanCamp scored on a breakaway ""deke" play to close out the game sheet. Assists were by Trevor Weisflock and Jamie Smith. All in all this was a good team shutout and our Malmont boys clear- ly deserved the "W." Best effort nominee by the coaching staff went to Mark Duncan. On Nov. 6 the team travelled to Trenton. With only eight seconds gone in the game, the Golden Hawk's goalie mishandled Dean VanCamp's high wrist shot after Mike LeFort had passed it off. Trenton tied the score at one off a three on two play. D'Arcy Stephens stoned them in net shortly after with a save from flat out on the ice. Further into the first period Jamie Smith set up Dean who converted a two on one with a shot through the "five-hole."" Dean scored again late in the period for a natural hat trick on a screen shot from well out. Late in the period Steve Ma- cLennan hustled back to avert a two man Tren- ton attack. Trenton started the second scoring on a power play and made it 3-2. Port then missed a return goal as Dane and Mark tried a two on one rush. Dean motored in on a breakaway on an assist by Trevor W. to restore a two goal bulge. Scott Dun- can then made a nice takeout along the boards to end the period. In the first two periods, Port held the edge in play but in the third period our forwards were a little sluggish in helping on defensive zone cov- erage and Trenton took advantage to bring the score to a 4-4 tie. D'Arcy was forced to make two great saves in a row with his pads "stacked." Ja- mie charged up the ice with the puck and steam rolled a Trenton defender for a nice effort. The momentum shift made it look like an all Trenton finish but Adam Moynes and Trevor W. assisted on Dane's goal from the slot to halt their recovery. With just over a minute left to play, Tim hustled back to break up a dangerous Trenton attack. Final score was a somewhat sloppy 5-4 win for Port Perry and extended the team's winning streak. Hey guys -- that's enough of those one goal nailbiters against Trenton! Good luck on your next home game on Nov. 11 at 8 p.m. against Lindsay. Techstars in tournament action On Nov. 2, the Techstars faced off against the Oshawa Red Wings at the Scugog Arena. Coming off their first loss of the regular season, the Tech- stars were out to get back on a winning track. The Techstars weren't quite themselves but managed to come out on top, with the help of some amazing goaltending by Doug Short. Short handled many breakaways including two three-on-ones. The Techstars opened the scoring at 12:39 of the first when J.P. Copeland scored from Dan Lyons and the Stars were up 1-0. The first period ended on that score. Aaron Levy struck twice in the second at 14:22 and 5:42 from Dave Kaminga on the first one, and Ryan Puckrin and Dave Kaminga on the second. Ian Parliament scored at 4:55 of the second from J.P. Cope- land and Adam "Bullet" Brain. Scott Sanderson got their final goal of the period on the power play from Dillan Weber and Dave Gainey. With 42 seconds left in the second, the Red Wing team fi- nally cracked the perfect goal- tending of Doug Short. The third period was quiet with the only goal scored at the 14:32 mark by Dan Lyons from Ian Parliament and "Bullet", to makeit 6-1. The Techstars' next home game is on Sunday, Nov. 13 at 9:15 pan. against Oshawa. On Friday, Nov. 4, the Tech- star Bantams collided with the home team in the Woodville tournament. Lack of good com- petition has gotten the best of the Techstars, and the fairly strong Woodville team walked away with a 5-3 victory. The Woodville team scored early and by the end of the first, it was 2-0. At 9:40 of the second, they added another one. The three- goal deficit looked bad but the Techstars fought back. They cut the lead to two goals when Ryan Puckrin put a shot off the goal- ie's pad and in the net. Assisting on the goal were Gavin Baxter and Scott Harper. Woodville scored another goal at 7:29 to make it 4-1. The Techstars got that one back when Dillan Weber scored from Dave Gainey and Scott Sander- son. Woodville regained the three- goal lead at 4:03. At 1:28 with the goalie (Bob Sim) on the bench in favor of the extra player, Troy Campbell put one home to make it 5-3. The next day, they suited up to play the Sutton A team in game two of this tournament. Things just didn't seem to be going their way this game and the 4-1score showed it. Troy Campbell scored their only goal from Dillan Weber and Gavin Baxter in the first shift of the game. This loss ended the tourna- ment for the Techstars. Al- though they were disappointed, these two games were a good wake-up call and showed them that all games won't be as-easy as their league games have been to date. Minor Novice meet with Innisfil squad A spirited Compton Cable team met the return of Innisfil on Saturday, Nov.5at7 p.m. Port Perry spotted he visi- tors two goals in the first period despite aggressive defence by Michael Lycett and an amazing Taylor Churchill. Compton Cable's Ashley Lucas scored a beautiful goal on a breakaway with assists from Kyle Mullins and newcomer Matthew Char- ron. A sharp centering pass from Cassidy Weber enabled Derek Goreski to tie it up. Kee- nan Geer had the other assist. Innisful came back with three unanswered goals even with solid defence from Shane Jef- frey who also broke away offen- sively a few times. Coach Doug Danter was quot- ed as saying "I think the whole team is playing really well con- sidering they've only been play- ing together for six weeks." Leaders keep pace in Scugog Hockey League A new month and a new round of hockey action has not stopped the Harrison Blazers as they continue to lead the pack in SHL play. Close behind, the Monsma Chargers and the Pineridge Phantoms continue to trail by a mere few points in anticipation of the Blazers' first loss of the season! However, Dave Harrison has his Fuel Boys full of "high octane" and who knows how long the streak will last! Phantoms vs Aces Game one saw the Phantoms narrow to just three points from first place with a hard-fought 2- 1 victory over the Taylor Aces. Although the Aces have but four points to date, they are real gamers and gave the Phantoms all they could handlein this ear- ly morning match. Rick Campbell scored for the Aces from Mark Pehlemann and John Kotarba late in the first period, but third period counters for the Phantoms by Brian Samis from Bill Van Camp and Lee Steeves, and Fred Moffatt from Van Camp and Samis sealed the important two points for the Pineridge crew. Hawks vs Sharks Game two saw those J&D Hawks inch closer to the lead- ers with yet another win as they .edged out the Van World Sharks 3-2. With Adam, Jobb, Connors and Fitzgerald miss- ing from the lineup, the Sharks all gave an extra effort in this game but just couldn't down those high-flying Hawks. Ritchie LeFort led the J&D boys with two goals and an as- sist. Rick Hope had the winner while single assists went to Kei- jo Kinnunen, Doug Suppelsa, "Regional" Reg McIntyre, Carl Durward and Chris Brain. The Shark replies saw Phil Cochrane with both tallies while assists were credited to Wayne Fox, Jay Adam, and snip- er Reg Templeman! Blazers vs Clippers Game three brought the fans to the glass as the mighty Harri- son Blazers took to the ice against a "full" Fitzgerald Clip- pers squad! As predicted last week, when Fitzy gets his gang together, the fans get a great game! Following some great saves at both ends of the rink, the Clippers struck first on a goal by Al Sibbald following up on a Larry Pilkey breakaway! Then the Blazers fought back on goals by Steve Churchill and John Harman to take a slim lead into the final period. Rich- ard Sakanashi, Dale Bronson, Darcy Milligan and, of course, Jim Beatty, all had Blazer as- sists. This set up an exciting final period of great action, and with just three minutes left, Clipper ace Larry Pilkey scored from Sibbald to knot the score at 2-2 and give both teams a well- deserved point apiece. Devils vs Chargers Game four started out as a real surprise as the Pizza De- light Devils held the second place Monsma Chargers ip check with a 1-0 lead, for a peri- od and a half, on a bullet by Bill Foote from Bob Beveridge! However, then the doors flew off, the tires went flat, etc., etc., as the Devils surrendered 10 unanswered goals to those elec- trifying Chargers, to take a 10-1 pasting! The timekeepers had writer's cramp as Jason Warner count- ed four goals, Tony Oxley a pair, and singles to Brad Hurst, Dave Thompson, Jim Duncan and Bill Bridge. Duane Bronson led the assist parade with four, Oxley, Rick Olaisen, Lee Wilbur and Paul Van Camp each had two, while singles went to Hurst, Duncan, Bob Lee, John Robertson and sponsor Jack Monsma. This is one game sheet that: "delighted" the Monsma players, but certainly was one to forget for the Pizza Squad. Gamblers vs Comets Things continued to put smiles on the faces of the snip- ers as game five saw the Cran- dell's Gamblers blast the Comp- ton Comets 7-2. With only 12 goals total scored in the first three games of the day, the last two with a total of 20 put lots of candidates aiming for scoring honors! Ken Jeffrey led his Gamblers in this one with a goal and three assists. Mark Decosta, Carl Durham, Henry Forderer, Ja- mie Taylor, George Gladish and Robert Evans all had single tal- lies for the win. Durham, Steve Groves and Bob Partington had two assists each with single . helpers going to Decosta, For- derer, Mark Burger and Bryan Norton. For the Comets, Doug Bache with yet another, and Ken Davi- son had counters. Assists went to Dave Dickson, Bill Weisflock and Ron Zaparanuik. This week's action kept the crowd buzzing all day.
