. B18 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, November 8, 1994 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Infrastructure grants announced Feds, province fund college A $1,014,175 project, ap- proved under the Canada/ Ontario Infrastructure Works program, will create an estimat- ed 11.7 person-years of short- term employment and three long-term jobs, Durham MP Alex Shepherd, Durham East, MPP Gord Mills and Gary Po- lonsky, Durham College, Presi- dent, announced recently. Funding will be used to con- struct an addition to the main building at the Oshawa Cam- pus, which will link two older buildings and will provide addi- tional classrooms to accommo- date the latest program deliv- ery technologies. In addition, the project will upgrade the main building to improve access for persons with disabilities. Work is scheduled to start im- mediately and should be com- pleted by Aug. 30, 1995. "Durham College is the only post-secondary institution in this riding and its facilities are used by many other universities and institutions providing high-quality education to our area," said Mr. Shepherd. "I am glad to see governments work- ing together for our youth's fu- ture by investing more than $1 million to improve infrastruc- ture at Durham Collage." "Durham College is an impor- tant and unique centre for learning and contributes great- ly to the life of the community. I am pleased that this project will stimulate economic renewal through job creation and build- ing infrastructure," said Mr. Mills. "The grant will enable us to create new kinds of learning spaces, which will accommo- date the new learning strate- gies and information technolo- gies, that are becoming a vital component to providing accessi- ble, current, relevant and ac- countable education in the 90s," said Mr. Polonsky. Canada/Ontario Infrastruc- ture Works is a $2.1 billion shared-cost program designed to create jobs through local pri- ority projects which will im- prove the province's infrastruc- ture and therefore its competitive position. Canada, Ontario and local partners are each contributing one-third of the project funding. The program, which is ex- pected to create up to 37,000 di- rect and indirect jobs, is a posi- tive example of the federal, provincial and local levels of government working co- operatively to foster economic development and growth. 077 Wr 1s § ES ny » WE COVER ao] a Ql o-Td SVAN.
