Ward 1, described by council- lors, as a "big, big ward" was cut down, with several residents changed to Ward 2. From there Ward 2 was divided into two wards, this creating the new Ward 5. The residents of Prince Al- bert, Castle Habour and Caw- ker's Creek, who during the last election were included in Ward 1 were deleted from the ward and added to Ward 2. Ward 2 was then split into two wards, using Queen Street as a divi- sion. In essence if youlive on the north side of Queen Street, you are voting for Ward 5 candi- £ 3» V3 8 7 W ». The re- mainder of Ward 1 remains the same. The decision to add a fifth ward seat, does not affect the residents of Ward 4 or Ward 3. The purpose of creating an ad- ditional ward seat was to abol- ish the Area Councillor seat. The intent, according to the township, "is in keeping with the spirit of the Municipal Elec- tion Act, to distribute the repre- sentation by population on a more equitable basis for both elector as well as elected." At the time of the proposed changes Scugog Township Council invited comments in support and opposition of the changes. Then Mayor Howard Hall said that population projections indicated the need for such a re- distribution. Harvey Graham, who is fin- ishing up his final term on coun- cil and the final term for the Area Councillor seat, said the redistribtuion of the wards + would provide better represen- tation for the residents. Candidates debate night council meetings By Kelly Lown Port Perry Star While not all of the local municipal candidates feel night time council meetings would be productive, most are willing to compromiseifitis what the public wants. During last week's all candidates meeting, several candi- dates stated their constituents had relayed the message that they want later meetings, to allow themto attend sessions. Ward 1 candidate Doug Moffatt told the audience he wants to see meetings begin at 4 p.m. to allow more public involve- ment and Ward 4 candidate Fred Ford said he would like to see a mobile council which can hold meetings in various parts of the township as well as some in the evenings. Ward 1 candidate Barry Johnston and Ward 2 candidate Jim Grosvenor both said they were willing to accept alternate evening and afternoon sessions, and Ward 1 incumbent Ken Carruthers said he did not disagree with alternating -meet- ings. While Ward 5 hopefuls Karen Puckrin and Wally Donald- son both agreed they would try the night time meetings, but neither was convinced the later meetings would be produc- tive. Mrs. Puckrin said she was willing to try the alternate idea, but felt that after a long day, people get tired and maybe the meetings would not be as productive. Mr. Donaldson said if he believed the change of time would make more people come to meetings he would be for it, but he doesn't believe night ses- sions would attract more people, while afternoon sessions are more productive. Ward 4 hopeful Joyce Kelly took a hands-off approach, say- ing "if it's working, keep it working that way." She also felt there may be a flurry of activity at the first few night sessions which would slack off. The other two incumbents Ward 2 councillor Marilyn Pearce and acclaimed Ward 3 councillor Ken Gadsden, both stated they feel daytime meetings are more productive. Both also added, that anyone who has ever requested a night time meeting, "has always been accomodated."
