Once again, I thank you for your support and confidence Howard Hall Mayor, Township of Scugog Partners in dispute mum on future of Canterbury Common By Jeff Mitchell Port Perry Star The parties in the Canterbury Common dispute had their day in court early last week, but aren't releasing details on the proceedings. They've promised to issue a joint press release on any agreement or ruling soon. The fate of the housing development, east of Simcoe St. in the north end of Port Perry, has been in question since a split between Quorum Development Corp. and partners and Mackenzie M.E.F. Management Inc. in late summer. Quorum president Mark Dawson claimed his company representatives were locked out of the property on the Labor Day weekend after a resolution could not be reached in a dispute with Mackenzie M.E.F. The dispute proceeded to court, with a hearing beginning last Monday (Nov. 7). Mr. Dawson, contacted at his Markham office last week, would not comment on the state of the pro- ceedings, or a possible date for settlement of the dispute. Mackenzie president Allan Warren has also refused com- ment on the situation. Both parties, however, have vowed that the project will be completed, and that buyers will have their deals with the companies honored. There's been much speculation that the falling-out has centred around development of the 200-plus home subdivi- sion, billed as a community for active seniors. Canterbury Common is to feature three housing styles, situated on a nine-hole golf course. So far three model homes, opened to the public at a splashy reception late last summer, have been built, while other work has ground to a halt. In October, the firm Ernst and Young was appointed by the warring partners to manage the property and oversee on-site operations, including showing potential purchasers omes. Rumors of a disagreement between the partners over inclusion of the golf course in the development is troubling to township officials, who worked closely with the developers in bringing Canterbury Common about. Some councillors have said the golf course is an integral part of the develop- ment, and may call for more public meetings on the project if the course is abandoned. Whatever the case, any new developments will have to be dealt with by the incoming township council, whose members will be sworn in in December. Township Administrator Earl Cuddie said recently the timing of the situation is "very unfortunate". "I suspect the glitch is going to cause some hiccups until early in the new year," he said. : TOYOTA BEAT THE COLD AND SAVE! Call to book your service appointment now.
