16- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, November 15, 1994 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Sr D> PORT PERRY STAR Midget Panthers drop consolation final to Trenton On Saturday, Nov. 12, the Port Perry Panthers, sponsored by Lakeside Golf and Hockey, held their annual home tourna- ment at the Scugog Arena. The Panthers started the day with a 7 a.m. game against the Stouffville Clippers. The first period was all Panthers as they jumped out to a 2-0 lead. The first goal was scored by Matt Hobbs, assisted by Kevin Hobbs (no relation), at 6:43, and with- in 16 second, Jay King popped home the second, assisted by Daryl Bourgeois. Unfortunately, this sudden outburst appeared to wake up the Clippers as they scored one goal in the second and three in the third to take the game 4-2. Their last goal was an empty- netter, overall the Panthers played well, but the attraction of the penalty box appears to let them down at crucial times. Scott Prechitko played in net for this game and kept the Pan- * thers close as the Clippers per- formed their late rally. With the loss, the Panthers moved to the consolation side of the tourna- ment. The next game was against local rivals Uxbridge. This was a must-win situation for the Panthers, as the loser goes home. As in the first game, Port opened the game with contin- ued pressure in the Uxbridge end. This total effort paid off with a 2-0 lead at the end of the first period. Daryl Bourgeois' solid effort produced the first goal, assisted by Jeff Clarke and Greg Thompson. Later in the period, Jeremy Geer fin- ished off a nice passing play from Kenton LeFort and Jeff Clarke. The Panthers sustained the pressure in the second and bridge's one to take a command- ing 5-1lead into the third. Leading the way for Port was Ian Shrigley with two and Greg Thompson with one. Picking up assists in the second were Rob- ert Gracie, Chris Drury, Craig Laird, Kenton LeFort, Greg Thompson and Kevin Hobbs. The boys played a smart third period and finished the game with a Chris Drury blast from the blue line, assisted by Craig Laird, to win 6-1. John Babcock was solid in net, making some nice saves when called upon to do so. In the consolation final, the Panthers were up against Tren- ton. Although the boys played well, they were unable to break down the Trenton defence and capitalized on their chances. Trenton played a solid two-way game and came out on top 3-0. Scott Prechitko was between the pipes for this one and de- served a better fate, considering the strong goaltending display. The Panthers would like to thank the ModJacks for the use of their dressing room. It was very much appreciated by the players. Also thanks to Robert Gracie, up from the Midget B team, for filling in on defence for the day. A big welcome to Greg Thompson, recently added to the Panthers squad from the Midget B team. The opposition will have to keep their heads up, now that Greg's on the team. Last, but not least, the Pan- thers' players would like to thank all the people who orga- nized and ran the tournament. It went very smoothly and was kept on schedule all day and provided all who attended a good day's hockey entertain- ORTS ' J. Atom Bs have busy week On Nov. 10, the Pineridge Sports Atom Bs hosted our arch rivals from Uxbridge. In the first period, Michael Milligan opened the scoring, assisted by Geoff Simpson. Derek Bond played well on his wing, hus- ting and forechecking. Ux- bridge tied it up and it re- mained 1-1 until T. J. Robins scored the game winning goal from a great pass by David Hal- ward. Strong defensive play by Wes Langmaid helped keep us ahead. Uxbridge pulled their goalie in the remaining seconds of the game but Pineridge was victorious. Final score 2-1. This was a close and exciting game. Thursday night' hard work set us up for our first tourna- ment which was held Nov. 12in Cannington. Our first game had us face the strong host team. Shane Fischer made some spec- tacular glove saves. Even though we were applying good pressure, we didn't get on the scoreboard until the third peri- od when Gerard Timmers had a breakaway and was robbed by the goalie, but T. J. Robins was there to put away the rebound. Final score 5-1. Congratula- tions to the boys for good sports- manship for having a penalty- free game. In game two, we were up against the team from Sutton. In the first period, Glenn Thompson opened the scoring with assists from Dylan Harper and T. J. Robins.
