_IMUNICIPAL VOTE '94 - THE WINNERS Vol. 128 No. 52 PORT PERRY, ONTARIO - TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 15, 1994 Copy 65¢ 61¢ + 4¢GSD HALL WINS Incumbent earns third term by a landslide By Jeff Mitchell Port Perry Star Howard Hall had an easy ride to his third term as Mayor of Scugog Township when voters here went to the polls Monday. Mayor Hall defeated his only challenger, David Malcolm, by a margin of more than 1,800 votes, losing just one of the more than 40 polls in the town- ship along the way. He received 4,145 votes to Mr. Malcolm's 2,294, a sharp contract to three years ago, when he squeaked by his oppo- nent -- Mr. Malcolm's brother, Glenn -- by just 98 votes. Glenn Malcolm made an unsuccessful bid this time around for the regional council- lor's seat, held firmly by incum- bent Yvonne Christie. Councillor Christie won by a margin of more than 2,000 votes, receiving 4,237 to Mr. Malcolm's 2,223. She and Mayor Hall will remain Scugog's representa- tives at Durham regional coun- cil, and joins other incumbents Ken Gadsden, who was acclaimed in Ward 3, and Marilyn Pearce, who handily defeated challenger Jim Grosvenor in Ward 2. There will be a new look to the council that will be sworn in this December, though. For one thing, most of them are women. Besides Councillors CF .stie and Pearce, two new- comers -- Joyce Kelly in Ward 4 and Ward 5 rep Karen Puckrin -- will be at the table. And incumbent Ken Carruthers was defeated in a very close race with challenger ' - LJ ' Doug Moffatt, who topped him by just 50 votes. He was the only incumbent to lose in his bid for re-election. = "Phe remaining incumbent, Ward 4's David Dietlein, with- drew from the race this fall after learning he would have to resume treatment for cancer. Meanwhile, incumbent Bobbie Drew returns for a third term as public school board trustee in Scugog after she 'defeated three challengers. And separate board trustee Kathy LeFort easily defeated her opponent John Sacco; Mr. Sacco challenged Mrs. LeFort back in 1991 as well. Results of the 1994 election were painfully slow coming in early in the evening. The first results -- from a poll in Ward 4 -- weren't in until 90 minutes after the polls closed at 8 p.m, but the pace picked up as the evening went on. In the major races -- for mayor and regional councillor -- the trend toward victory for the incumbents was established early, and stayed that way. Both Malcolms lost polls on their home turf of Cartwright, lead- ing observers to conclude early in the proceedings their bids would not be successful. The closest race of the evening was between Mr. Carruthers and Doug Moffatt , decided by a 50-vote margin. The race between Mrs. Kelly and challenger Fred Ford went down to the wire as Mrs. Kelly held a slight lead; she wound up besting Mr. Ford by just 74 votes. . N I i NTL A oN A se tl T oi ox J.
