" Curling Season Underway The Curling Bonspiel season got underway last Wednesday at the Port Perry Curling Club with the Mother Jackson's Open Bonspiel. Sixteen rinks competed during the day with a rink from the Whitby Curling Club winning the trophy. Above, Joanne Fowler, centre, presents the trophy to, from left, Mary Parks, vice skip, Gerri DeMille, skip, Sharon Munro, 2nd and Barbara Gambell, lead. ModJacks roll over Georgina Ice by David Stell The Port Perry MoJacks sure can make it hot for the opposi- tion when they get rocking. The Georgina Ice couldn't stand the heat Sunday night and melted under a six-goal barrage by the ModJacks. It's hard to believe the Mo- Jacks ever trailed in this one. The Ice scored on a power play in the first, for a 1-0 lead, but it turned out to be their only goal of the game. The ModJacks went on to score six unanswered goals against the Ice for a 6-1 win. night on the ice. He scored the ModJacks' first three goals and added an assist in the win. His first goal came in the opening period and it tied the game at 1- 1. But four penalties played a part in the goal. Mike Pigeau, who was al- ready in the penalty box, was Joined by Gavin Cochrane, who earned his first penalty of the game at the time. But Cochrane didn't go alone because on the play he brought two skaters from Georgina to the box with him. That led to the two teams playing four-on-four hockey and it left Leslie with a lot of skating room. He took a pass from Du- ane Empringham in front of the Keith Leslie had an excellent net and buried it. It was just a beginning, however. Leslie's second goal put the ModJacks up for good and it came with just under two min- utes left in the first. Taking a pass from Pigeau, Leslie skated away from the Georgina net be- fore turning and shooting around an Ice defender into the corner of the net. Ice goaltend- er, Brian Hoult, didn't even see b coming. Make it ModJacks 2, cel. KEITHLESLIE Leslie's third goal came in the second period on a power play. Again Pigeau helped set up the goal and only 14 seconds into the man advantage. Leslie skat- ed into the hashmarks and beat Hoult with a blast into the cor- ner of the net for the hat trick and a two-goal lead. a |. \ NW CITE ER) hi RA KD, 00 soe SQ mmm RS ~ 146 Queen ST a1 WaTek 985-0060 Kevin Vivian was the next ModJack to beat Hoult. Rushing full speed towards the net, with an Ice defender right on top of him, Vivian flew at the net, fall- ing and crashing into Hoult. But he was still able to take a Leslie pass and chip a shot over the Ice goaltender to put the ModJacks up by three. The speed of the Port Perry forwards was a big problem for the Ice all night. They just couldn't keep up with the Mo- Jacks' quick attack. Ian Titter- ton joined the goal parade on a rush led by Todd Stirling and Cochrane. Stirling fed a pass right in front of the Georgina crease that left Titterton with a lot of net to shoot at. He played it perfectly and the goal made the score 5-1. But it was the end of the line for Hoult. The Ice brought in their back- up goalie at that point, but they can't blame the loss on Hoult. Some excellent saves , were wasted when the Ice defence gave up too many chances to the sharp-shooting ModJacks. The final goal for Port Perry came from Jeremy Ross when his low show from the point slipped un- der the new goaltender for the Ice. The third-period goal iced the win for the MoJacks. GAVIN COCHRANE Cochrane was in the middle of the action all night. He made a nice play in the first period to stop an Ice breakaway. Co- chrane, diving at the Georgina forward, managed to slap the puck away to deny the Ice for- ward a chance at scoring. "It felt good," he said. "I'm not a fast skater and I got caught behind him. It was my only play." Cochrane, a physical force on the ice, also dropped the gloves in the game when he got a hold of Georgina's Todd Hamblin early in the third period. Co- chrane landed a few quick punches, but it appeared he got Lindsay from scoring. final score was 4-4. Pineridge Atoms game was exciting Pineridge Atom Bs went to Lindsay Saturday afternoon for the most exciting game of the year so far. Port started off with a quick goal by Spencer Churchill assisted by Geoff Simpson. Lindsay came right back to tie it up. In the second period Lindsay got three more goals keeping Shane Fischer busy between the pipes. Both teams played short-handed with numerous penalties. David Halward scored Port Perry's second goal assisted by T.J. Robins and Glen Thompson scored another assisted by Dy- lan Harper to finish the second period. A few more penalties from both teams and great defense by Mike Wiseman, Mike Thompson, Wes Langmaid, and Gerrett Brown. Port stopped Gerrard Timmers picked up the puck and rushed the net scoring the tying goal. Joey Schembri, Derek Bond, Mike Milli- gan, and Matt Skerratt kept the Lindsay netminder very busy while Zack Fis in net for Pineridge made numerous stops. The the worst of it when he got tan- gled up in his equipment. He didn't look too bad after the game, though, with no marks on him to show for the fight. "We had abit of a grudge with him (Hamblin) from last game," Cochrane said. "He got the stick up and gave Chad (Kearns) stitches. I had the opportunity so I though I'd give it a chance." The ModJacks will lose him for their next game this Saturday, when Bowmanville returns to Port Perry for their third matchup of the season. It could be another good one. These two teams save their best games for each other. Leslielooks at Sunday's game against the Ice as a primer for this Saturday's title with the . Eagles. "Those games are just warm-ups for Bowmanville," he said. "Thev're the team to beat." Leslie gave a lot of credit to the rest of the team for his hat trick. helping me out tonight, getting me the puck," he said. "You can't miss those ones when they set you up in front of the net." "My teammates were The win on Sunday capped a strong week for the ModJacks. They went into Uxbridge and beat the Bruins 5-2 on Tuesday and returned to Port Perry Thursday for a return match - with Little Britain. The Mo- Jacks made up for an 8-6 loss the previous Saturday in Little Britain and beat the Merchants 6-3back on homeice. Now the MoJacks will use the week to prepare for the high fly- ing Eagles, whose only loss this year came at the hands of the ModJacks. Game time is 7 p.m. Saturday at Scugog Arena and it will probably be a packed house to watch thesé two rivals. Techstars lose one On Sunday, Nov. 13, the Oshawa Black Hawks came to town for a league game. The Techstars had handled the Black Hawks pretty easily in their only other meeting. But Sunday night wasn't their night. With some help from the men in stripes, the Black Hawks won 7-6. Things looked good early as they jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals by Gavin Baxter and Dan Lyons. Assists went to Ryan Puckrin and Scott Sanderson (on Baxter's goal) and Wyatt Park (on Lyon's). Two minutes later, the Black Hawks got one back to make it 2-1 Techstars. Scott Sanderson got that one back on an unassisted goal. With 2:56 left in the first period, a bad call by the ref seemed to get to the Techstars. The Black Hawks got two power-play goals and the game was tied 3-3. The two teams traded goals early in the second. Ian Parlia- ment scored an unassisted goal. The Black Hawks took their first lead of the game to make it 5-4. Ryan Puckrin got that one back when Dillian Weber passed it out to him in front of the net. The Black Hawks scored one more to make it 6-5 goinginto the third. The Techstars tied it up early in the third when Ryan Puckrin went in alone and put in his sec- ond of the night. With just over two minutes to go, the Black Hawks scored to take a 7-6 lead. With less than 30 second to go and the goalie out, Dillian We- ber rang one off the inside of the crossbar for what should have tied the game but, unfortunate- ly, the ref didn't see it that way. That was Weber's second goal called back in the game. On Thursday, the Techstars went to Sutton to face a well "pathetic" Sutton team. The Techstars walked away with an easy 12-1 win. Wyatt Park led the scoring with three goals. Scott Harper, Troy ampbell, Glen McCreedy, Ryan Puckrin, Scott Sanderson, J.P. Copeland, Dil- lian Weber, Ian Parliament and Adam "Bullet" Brain scored the other goals. Assists went to Dave Gainey (two), Ryan Puckrin (two), Dil- lian Weber (two), Ian Parlia- ment, Dan Lyons (three), Glen McCreedy (two), Troy Camp- bell, J.P. Copeland (two), Scott Sanderson and Scott Harper. Doug Short played a good game in goal, just barely miss- ing the shutout. an IP t------- t----., At; op * ott po PN one ANTI ri neg ~s--
