Pictured are the members of the team. Back row from left are: Shannon Wyville, Lea Lansdell, Mary Smith, (front) Kirsten Johnson, Kelly Coates and Rebecca German. Atoms were finalists On Nov. 19 the Atom As played their first tournament of the season in Port Hope. Other teams competing were from Co- bourg, Georgetown, Hamilton, Newcastle, Oshawa LNHL and Pickering. The green machine opened with an easy 4-1 win over Picker- ing. This game featured a pleasantly surprising amount of ex- cellent passing especially with the forwards using their point men well in the offensive zone. The result was a peppering of rubber against the Pickering goalie. Mike Koury guarded our net in this one. Hilights of the first period included a breakaway chance by Justin Moffatt and a fo- ray by Mike LeFort through the defence. Goals were by Dean VanCamp on a backhander, a power play goal by Jeff Tarbotton from Trevor Lance and Mike LeFort and by Trevor Lance on a rebound with assists to Mark Duncan and Dean VanCamp. In the second, Mike LeFort was hustling again and had a near miss on a two on one with Dean Van Camp. Steven Ma- - cLennan made a scintillating rush from his rear guard position. Trevor Weisflock hit the goal post shortly after. Tyler Hou- thuys showed heads-up neutral zone passes to trigger our for- ward attacks. In the third, Dean notched an insurance goal on a two on one breakaway. Assists were by Tyler and Mark. Then Scott Dun- can came up big to block a shot on a two on one Pickering rush. Near the end of the period, Tim Jones stepped up from the blue line to get a good chance from the slot as Dean fed a perfect pass from the corner. Good win for the team..fine passing! Dane Gray was nominated for the "best effort" by the coaches. Next game was against the Hamilton Bengals who had beat- en the Georgetown Raiders earlier. This game proved to be too easy a win for our team in retrospect as they won handily 10-2. Hamilton scored one goal on a breakaway. Offensive hilights included a breakaway backhanded deke by Dean, a bullet wrist shot goal by Mike LeFort and a tic-tac-toe passing play for Ad- ams' goal from Mike and Dean. The defence did their bit as well as Jamie Smith popped one in from the high slot. On the defen- sive side of things, Tim Jones made a sliding takeout to avert a breakaway as the clock wound down. A hat trick was notched by Dean VanCamp. Mike LeFort was the coaches' choice for best effort. This win earned a berth in the A cham ionship against Co- bourg who beat Newcastle in their semi-final. Cobourg used a clutch and grab style to slow down our forwards and skated ag- grossively to defuse our efforts to organize a sustained attack. This combined with too many penalties on our part allowed Co- bourg to capture a 3-2 victory. The winning goal came on a sec- ond period breakaway as the forward flipped the puck over D'Arcy Stephens in net. D'Arcy had made several key saves to keep the score close earlierin the contest. Offensive highlights were Malmont goals by Mike LeFort af- ter splitting the defence (assist to Adam) and a quick wrist shot goal by Dean from Mike and Adam. Good penalty killing work was done by Tyler Houthuys, Adam, Dean and Jamie in the first period. Tim played a steady game on defence as did Scott. With a little more sustained intensity and continued im- provement in 14-player passing, the Maimonts will hopefull move up to the next level of play that is within their potential, Good luck in your Huntsville Tournament next weekend. nemo SE TR WE 2 RG Ia -- i ---- EE rs A EER nr Sag a i) Se LOR ER A Nr LSE ir IE
