18- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, November 29, 1994 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" SPORTS Islanders action On Saturday, Nov. 19, the players of the Midget Canadian Tire Islanders awoke early to the sound of their blazing alarm clocks. They were to be in Picton, a two hour drive, fora 10 a.m. start as they took part in the Prince Edward County tourna- ment. The Islanders looked tired in their opening game against a squad from Brampton. The two teams were well matched, but Port came outon the shortend of a 4-2 decision. Port struck first as Matt Brown scored, following his own shot, after getting the puck from Eric Lucyk. That's when Port decided it would be a good time to take a team snooze. It cost them dearly as Brampton scored four goals and put the game outofhand. Port made a weak comeback effort as Trevor Smith blasted one home from the point assisted by Jason Logan and Matt Phillips, making the score somewhat respectable. After a 'chowdown, Port put on a better show for their cheer- ing section with a 10-3 demolishing ofthe host team. Jon Jamieson, who missed the first game due to a prior en- gagement, led the way for the Islanders scoring a hat trick. Tim Fitzpatrick followed suit with a pair of goals with singles going to Matt Phillips, Mark Brownson, Matt Brown, Jonathan McCourt and Rob Gracie. Helpers were credited to Jason Lo- gan, Adam Hunter, Kevin Gray, Todd Parry, Eric Lucyk, Tre- vor Smith, Brownson, McCourt, Phillips, and Fitzpatrick. As you can see, aside from the goalies, everybody was in on this act. Speaking of goalies, Jamie Trick came up with a few key saves when he was tested to keep Port rolling. Since this was only a four team tournament Port made it to the "A" finals with a tourney total of 8-1/2 points. There they met Brampton once again and lost to the same exact score as they did in their previous meeting. Not only was the score the same, but the entire flow of the game seemed to resemble the first match. Once again Port had the red light glaring first as Matt Brown's hard work paid off. Adam Hunter and Jon Jamieson set Matt up. Then Brampton, as if on cue, scored three goals to put Port in abig hole. After Jamieson scored from Brown to bring Portinto the game, Brampton added the insurance they needed and took home their well deserved first place trophy. Brian Bickmore was superb between the pipes as he turned back Brampton a number of times. Although Port lost more games then they won, they were still able to bring home some hardware to put on their shelves. The following Wednesday Port rolled into Beaverton where they battled with the Blades. The Islanders seemed to be run- ning on empty in this game as they fell behind early by a score of 4-0. : It wasn't until the 4:18 mark of the second period that Tim Fitzpatrick banged home a power-play goal assisted by Todd Rr Rp -- anne WOR CES a a i A Midget Panthers manage 3-3 deadlock with Cobourg This past week, the Panthers played two games - one in Port on Monday, Nov. 21 and then again the following evening at the "Old Barn" in Cobourg. They were scheduled to play a league game against Trenton on Monday, however, due to the "Golden Hawks" not being "late night birds", this game was can- celled and an exhibition game with Bowmanville was hastily arranged. It appeared to be just what the doctor ordered...our Panthers jumped out to an ear- ly 3-0 lead with goals by Matt Hobbs (on a breakaway), Ken- ton LeFort (coming out from the corner and jamming it home) and Kevin Hobbs (with a blast from the blue line). Assisting on these goals were Ian McCready, Daryl Bourgeois, Jay King, Eric Hudson, Greg Thompson and Matt Hobbs. Bowmanville hung in and fi- nally managed to score their lone goal of the night to end the first period 3-1. Port Perry fin- ished their evening by coring a goal in the second and third pe- riods for a final 5-1 victory. In the second, Ian Shrigley was set up in the slot by Greg Thomp- son and slipped it home. Later in the third, Craig Laird fired a rocket at the net - right on tar- get. Matt Hobbs ended a big night, assisting on both of these goals. Alas, we were not to have the talents of Matt Hobbs with us the following evening (owing to a slight dispute he and the Bow- manville goalie exchanged). Also not with us in Cobourg was Tommy Chambers. Howev- er, following a big Bantam win in an earlier game that same evening, Shane Norton and Jay Strickert filled in admirably for our pr occupied Panthers. We were ready - starting things off on the right foot was Craig Laird unassisted, who managed not only a goal but a rebound at- tempt as well...would it be counted twice?? No, only once, but we're on the board and geared to play. Next our "fire ball" Kenton makes his usual quick getaway but a Cobourg player zooms in on him to crush his efforts. Scot- tie manages a big save during this penalty and Port comes away unscathed. Plenty of pucks are flying off the rink and into the stands, keeping one dad busy retrieving...think the Panthers will sign you, Ivan? We fail to capitalize on a.good opportunity when Cobourg's ag- gressive pursuit lands them in hot water. With six attackers on and Scottie on the bench things are -eally heating up. Unfortu- nately, we fall short on this pen- alty advantage and at the end of the first, the score is still 1-1. Big Ian has been firing them in fast and furious from the blue line - surely one of them will go in before the night is through! Yes, indeed, 55 comes alive with a "blast from the past" and it's a hit. This big goal is assisted by Kevin Hobbs and Jay Strickert. The Panthers are really work- ing together and it shows. Later in the second with some real teamwork from Jeremy, Craig, Jay and Ian Shrigley, Kenton sneaks one in the corner to in- crease the boys' lead to 3-1. Way to go, guys, that's what Warren likes to see. It's Scott's turn to shine when Cobourg makes a sudden attack but he snuffs out their fire several times until fi- nally they counter attack and move within one. Now they're hungry for more but the Pan- thers are not about to let up. Jeremy, as always, makes some superlative moves up the ice and almost wangles us another goal which seems to inspire eve- ryone. After the flood (and a much needed warmup for some frozen fans), both teams are geared for a great third period. Unfortu- nately, Cobourg manages to pull one out of their hat and we're tied 3-3. It's a fight to the finish and as the seconds wind down, the game ends in a 3-3 tie. The Pan- thers have.shows they can play well against their ongoing ri-- vals. Good job, everyone! Scotty Heffern and Jay Strickert both got the sacred hat trick. Strickert scored two goals on one shift, and still wasn't happy with himself! Heffy had to leave the game halfway through the second period to get stitched up. He had a 16 stitch cut, and he didn't even bleed! Man, he's tough. : Smitty and Morden both scored to finish Oshawa and send them home, empty handed. After winning our first two, we were off to the championship game vs Huntsville. We were a little bit tired at this point in the day, but still tried our hardest. Unfortunately, we were on the short end of a 4-1 score. Murphy scored for us on a beautiful two on one. Hobbsy went down with the puck and got it onto the doorstep, where Murphy was waiting with a one-timer, top shelf. This was a beauty goal! Savage didn't have too much help in the defensive end. The Huntsville players were allowed to stand wherever they wanted toin front of the net. If we had of taken the body a little more, the score would have been different, I know it. Assistant coach, Lee Wilbur said "the guys played a good solid tournament. They've been playing great hockey as of late, and it's good to see. We've taken next to no penalties, and I think that really helps our team concept. Com- munication is one of the keys to a successful hockey team, and I think that we've achieved it." Parry and Jonathan McCourt. Matt Brown scored two minutes later from Jon Jamieson and Eric Lucyk to bring Port back into the game. The Islanders then snuck one goal closer when Matt Phillips was set up by Devin Blairand Mark Brownson. Howev- er,it was not to be for Port on this night. Beaverton added a goal late in the period to go ahead by a pair. Kevin Gray got Port to within one again as he unloaded his cannon from the point and sent the puck soaring over the goalie's shoulder. Trevor Smith picked up the lone assist on the oal. ¢ This was all the scoring Port could muster though, and they lost a heartbreaker 5-4. " Come out to the rink this Wednesday night to watch Port col- lide with Beaverton again. lack of a report last week for the Port Perry Country Style Donutmen. I was caught up with my studies and couldn't put my English book down. The team's been pretty busy lately. We've played some great hockey. Trenton tried their luck in our building on Nov. 21. They must have known that they were done before the warm-up was over because we were pumped! The final score was 10-3 for the good guys. Goalscorers were Froats (two), Strickert, Norton, Smitty (two) and Troy Campbell with four goals! Troy was called up from the farm team for this one. What a game Troy had. This kid knows how to handle the puck. Were his goals pretty to watch, or what! The next night, we took a trip to Cobourg to tangle with our life-long enemies. Folks, I tell ya, I couldn't remember the last time I've been on a team that's beaten Cobourg before this one. Again, we came out flying, playing tough, old-time hockey. This was another great game for us, winning 4-1. Murphy sniped our first and third goals past the Cobourg goalie, while Norty and Smitty filed the others. It was great beating those guys in the barn. Geez, I hate that place. We carried our momentum into the week- end, playing in our own "Port Perry IGA Ban- tam Tourney." Our first game against OPS was played before the sun rose, making it difficult to get going. Affiliated player, Dan Lyons, WORKS ON ' NEW CARS, USED CARS, bs EVEN RUSTY CARS! Lairdy, who isn't known for his offensive skills picked up an assist. Some may say that Laird plays a similar style of game as Marty McSorely. Mike Morden and Motor City Smitty also picked up assists. The final score was 3-2, Port. This sent us to the "A" side of the tournament and up against a big, tough Oshawa team. Oshawa winger, Kent Fulling, created a problem for Port as he was a physical force. His legs must have been as thick as oak trees, no joke.
