B14 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, November 29, 1994 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" "High school students enjoy Literary Guild L 2 [8 BY Trevor Hayman On Wednesday, Nov. 22 the OAC Writer's Craft class at Port Perry High School orga- nized and hosted a school-wide Literary Guild. The event was the culmination of many hours of planning, and resulted in a day-long event held in the li- brary. Students attending the con- ference were from all grades and levels. The Writer's Craft class felt it was important for students to learn from other students, and this integrated setting allowed for growth through diversity. Writer's Craft teacher, Gayle Ebbesen said, "We thought it .was important to provide an op- portunity to share and cele- brate writing in a positive, ac- cepting, safe environment. The Writer's Craft class showed ter- rific leadership in organizing and running this event." There were four sessions in which the students were placed at one of five different theme ta- bles - Horror, Humor, Romance, Mystery and Science Fiction. Ice Breaker games were used as a way to make the students feel comfortable with each other, and the group as a whole. After the students had got to know one another they pulled their prized pieces of writing from pockets and notebooks, Crime Stoppers seek robbers Crime Stoppers and the Dur- ham Regional Police Robbery Squad are asking for the pub- lic's help in solving an armed robbery which occured in Oshawa on Thursday, April 21. Just after 10 p.m. the victim, who is a truck driver for TRS Food Groups, was parked on Wolfe Street near the security entrance for A.G. Simpson plant. The victim had removed six money bags from the truck and was going to go into the plant to service the vending ma- chines when he was attacked from behind. He was pushed 'and shoved to the rear of the ve- ~hicle and told not to turn around or he would be shot. He felt something solid shoved into his back and then both suspects ordered him to open the truck and turn over the money. He was forced into the truck on his knees and then handcuffed be- hind his back. The suspects took a large amount of cash in money bags and then locked the victimin the truck. Witnesses recovered several empty money bags near the scene but one blue bag, with the. name Aggdys on it, is still miss- ing. Both suspects are described as males, approx. early 20s, one was white. The suspects were seen running northbound from Wolfe St. towards the rear of Harman Park Arena. Crime Stoppers is asking the community to call in any infor- mation on this crime or any oth- er criminal offence to help com- bat crime in your area. The Police Service needs the com- munity to become involved in crime prevention and by phon- ing Crime Stoppers you can as- sist. The Crime Stoppers phone number is 436-8477, that's 436- TIPS. and got ready to share. Each student took turns reading se- lections, and those at the table then gave comments and con- structive criticism. Literary games were used to foster communication and crea- tivity. Students used their table theme and old photographs as the basis for wild and imagina- tive stories. The groups then had to link and build on the sto- ry that was begun by the previ- ous groups. With all that creativity and originality (not to mention snow outside) flying around, the stu- dents needed refreshments. Do- nuts kindly supplied by Coun- try Style were enjoyed and appreciated by the partici- pants. The students that participat- ed seemed to really enjoy them- selves while learning. Tara No- lan, a Grade 12 student, said, "Getting everyone's opinion helped make our stories better. Constructive criticism was es- pecially useful. A really fun event!" Students participating in a Literary Guild at Port Perry High School last week Included Andrea Rudy (left), John Puterbough, Kyle Brough, Shelby Whittick, Robin Butler and Tre- vor Hayman. The event attracted students from all grades and levels, who came to share their writing and hear that of others.
