--_---- 8- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, November 29, 1994 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" 75 accidents reported Storm wreaks highway havoc Last Wednesday's over- night snowfall caught many motorists offguard and per- haps unprepared for winter driving as Durham Regional Police reported 129 accidents during the day. The morning rush hour traffic resulted in 75 acci- dents alone in the region be- tween the hours of 6-11 a.m. Most of the accidents were minor mishaps, including cars sliding into ditches. Only 11 injuries were report- ed as a result of the acci- dents, as well as one hit and run case. Durham Regional Police Sergeant Rick Bates, who is in charge of the Traffic Man- agement Unit, said officers were run off their feet re- sponding to accidents. Police cannot remember a first snowfall in other years causing as many problems on the highways. In the month of October po- lice in the region responded to 800 accidents and in one day responded to almost one quarter of that total, Sgt. Bates told the Star. 0 (CH H OF GR § LV Forder-Parks Insurance Brokers Inc. He led the fight against the plan to sell off the parkette, convening public meetings and making submis- sions to council. "I'm still against selling the park," he said. "I'm going to file an objection too, and let the cards fall where they may." He said that while he sup- ports the planned improve- ments to the fairgrounds, he feels they can be carried out without loss of the small park; he has suggested the fair- grounds improvements be car- ried out in stages to make the project more affordable. Mr. Ford said he would rely on the strong reaction of neigh- bors to argue against the rezon- ing. "My strategy, I think, will be that the expectation of people in that area was that was a park, and it would remain a park," he said. "I really think it's going against the expectations of the gommunity to sell this off as ots." Supporters of the parkette have said that with a minimal Investment, the township could install the kind of simple attrac- tions -- they've mentioned swings and a sand pile -- that would make it even more popu- lar. They also -- Mrs. Ansell included -- have accused council and the township recreation committee of going ahead with the plan without fully disclosing it to the public. That rankles Rik Davie, a Cartwright ball coach and boost- er of the fairgrounds upgrading. "Everything that had any- thing to do with this all along has been published," said Mr. Davie. "We're talking about a fairly substantial recreation facility for a large number of kids." Cartwright ball supporters appeared before council at a meeting in October to brief council on the benefits of selling off the parkette and funneling money toward fairgrounds improvements; council mem- bers voted unanimously in favor of a resolution to rezone the property, but delay putting it on the market to allow residents the opportunity to come up with an alternative plan to raise money for the fairgrounds. Mr. Davie said he's not wor- ried about the resolution being thrown out by the OMB -- the body makes rulings strictly on the basis of good planning prin- ciples -- but is concerned that the appeal will further delay the much-needed improvements at the ball fields. Plans include improvements to diamonds at the fairgrounds site, and installation of lights for night games. "It bothers me in that this could hold this up so the kids have to go without it for another season," he said. Township Administrator Earl Cuddie said a full hearing on the matter probably wouldn't be convened until late spring or the summer time. Tree display raises funds The Second Annual Yuletide Tapestry of Trees, in support of Alzheimer Disease Research, will take place on Sunday, Dec. 4 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Oshawa Golf Club. Sponsored by Alzheimer Dur- ham, the event includes after- noon tea, seasonal music and an art auction. Using the tree as a symbol of hope, Durham Region artists have created a unique collection of sculptures, fibre collage, paintings and photographs.
