12- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, December 6, 1994 "Scugog"s Community Newspaper of Choice" Trustees sharpen pencils as budget process begins From Page 1 "It's a starting point." Major capital costs in the forecast for 1995 are centred around new buildings the board 18 committed to carry on with, and costs associated with Junior Kindergarten, said Mrs. Drew. "There's some stuff we can make decisions on, and there's some stuff we're tied into," she said. "Like Junior Kindergarten: There's one per cent (of the budget hike) right there." The provincially-dictated program will introduce thou- sands of youngsters into the system next fall and Durham already has overcrowding prob- lems, said Mrs. Drew. "The fact is we've got a lot of kids in portables and if we're going to add 4,000 kids in Junior Kindergarten, we've got to build something for them." Bringing in a reasonable budget will require intensive review, and may result in some projects -- such as long-delayed renovations, and replacement of aging portables -- being put off for another year, said Mrs. Drew. "There are some things we can cut out," she said. As finance committee chair in 1994, Mrs. Drew oversaw a budget process that saw the board bring in a document requiring $12million less in taxes than that of the previous year. She was to find out last night if she retained the chair as members of committees for the new term were announced. Kids' Safety Village Kristi A [IN December 23, 1994.)
